Myripae

A bustling city set upon a port at the mouth of the Helcus Strait. Myripae is the richly diverse capital of Elaion, drawing to it peoples from around the world. In one of the many markets, trades and foods of all kinds can be found. Aromas of the street vendors mixes with the saltiness of the sea. Shouts of vendors, customers haggling, of fights and friendly conversations, carry through the air most hours of the day - and sometimes, well into the night. As the sun begins to set, and the markets begin to close, Myripae's nightlife draws in night owls until the early hours of the morning. For those who prefer a quieter scene, the farther reaches of the city are home to softer eateries and venues for entertainment. There's something for everyone in Myripae.

Demographics

Myripae is the only city in Elaion in which humans do not comprise of over 50% of the population. Humans make up about 30% of the city, with halflings being the second largest at 20%. The rest of the population is made up of a mix of half-elves, demonic, elves, half-orcs, orcs, gnomes, with goblins and dwarves - being more mountain-dwelling creatures - bringing up the rear, each at below 1%. The classes in Myripae are separated by sections of the city. Those in the upper-classes live behind gated communities, and often send out their servants to go to the markets for them. The middle and lower classes are predominant, making up 85% of the population.

Government

Myripae, being the capital of Elaion, is where the King holds court. The palace is in a separate section of the city, completely isolated from the rest of the population. It requires permission for entrance, automatically given to some (such as the King's counselors) and on a case-by-case basis for others (someone with a specific knowledge base may be called in).

Defences

Myripae is surrounded on one side by water. The nation's navy is housed nearby in case of any attacks by water. The other sides of the city are surrounded by two layers of large walls.

Industry & Trade

Myripae is a hub for trade. While the exports of the country lie primarily in timber and seafood, imports of vast varieties all find their way into Elaion through the capital city.

Infrastructure

Myripae prides itself on its diversity, and the appearance of the city shows it. Outside of the central port, some choose to build their houses on stilts rising just over the water. During floods, the disaster tends to be extreme, but it lends to easy and convenient fishing and sailing. Many of the structures of Myripae are built with wood or stone, but having some sort of symbol about the owners' identity is a common practice - sigils of a familial house, for example, or a specialized sign for a carpenter's shop. In the upper crust's section of town, it's common for the nobles to paint their houses vibrant colors, sometimes creating entire murals on the outer walls of their homes. This is in part to flaunt their wealth as a way of showing the artisans they are able to hire, as well as it is an effort to beautify the otherwise plain materials making up their homes.

History

Myripae has held a seat of power since some of the early settlers arrived, due to its advantageous location. What is now referred to as Elaion was once comprised of numerous city-states and small kingdoms. When the rule eventually fell to The Three Kingdoms, Myripae was the city which remained neutral among the three, and it was where the Three Kings would come to reach compromises during times of conflict.
