Serin Ethnicity in Iria | World Anvil

Serin

Born of dragons, the Serin walk proudly through a world that greets them with fearful incomprehension. Serin originally hatched from dragon eggs as a unique race, combining the best attributes of dragons and humanoids. Some Serin are faithful knights to true dragons, others form the ranks of soldiers in great wars, and still others find themselves adrift, with no clear calling in life.
Description
For some Serin their draconic heritage is much easier for them to hide with their features resmebling that of their non-dragon parent with they draconic heritage easily hidden or completely invisible. For others it's near impossible to hide their scaled form, claws, or even tails. Some Serin have horns, others have eyes that look as if plucked from a dragon themselves. Serin who have more attributes from their non-dragon parent have traits befitting of that race though they can end up with unique differences like hair or eye colour that the race normally do not have, or even a completely different tint to their skin.

All races can produce Serin offspring though it is rare for this to happen with some. A Serin Cas can resemble their humanoid parent, then take on the cas features as a cas normally would. This also means that those Serin who take on their dragonic form more can still be blessed as a Cas and gain those same traits. A Serin born to the Ali is unheard of within the world, the union is possible but not something that has been seen. A Serin born to the Wan could produce a vampiric Serin, if they were blessed with the ritual.
Personality
Serin have a well-known dedication to honor, but how deeply rooted this trait was remains debatable. To Serin, honor was more than a word and was often considered more important than life itself. Cowardice was not simply undesirable among serin, it was considered outright repulsive. Part of the roots of this honorable attitude lay in the Serin's drive for self-improvement. The draconic nature of Serin give them a strong self-consciousness and a tendency for strong emotions. Both of these combined to make Serin particularly wanting for the approval of others.

Serin placed great value on the skill of an individual, including themselves. Failing at a task was anathema to the Serin and as a result they could sometimes push themselves to unhealthy extremes of effort. This aspect of the Serin mind meant few of the race took a laid-back approach to any skill or ability, striving always to become the masters of a particular skill, and Serin respected those among other races who approached life in the same manner. As a result, most Serin adventurers came to their way of life through a desire to prove themselves and win respect from their brethren.

Serin often wore their hearts on their sleeves, typically hiding neither anger nor joy. Serin were enthusiastic about life, particularly success, and brooded about failure for only a short time before their disappointment was shaped into a strong drive for improvement. Only a handful of Serin actually demonstrated traits that might be considered timid or reserved, and the vast majority of the race had no qualms asking for what they needed or taking time to improve themselves. Trust was a major factor in the lives of all Serin and each expected others to be just as open and forthcoming with them as they were.
Society
The Serin drive for honor carried on into the culture of the race. Among Serin, the most horrible crime was oath-breaking; honesty was expected whenever a deal was struck. Commitment to a word was expected to be carried out to the letter and all parties in a transaction were held accountable and responsible for failings. Ultimately, those who failed to meet their word were expected to accept the consequences and, in fact, most Serin did so. So widespread was this value of honor and honesty that it was commonly believed that Serin never broke their word.
