Order of the Silver Gauntlet
The Order of the Silver Gauntlet are a group of paladins and clerics in service to the god Helm.
Structure
The Order is organised into a strict military hierarchy. The Supreme Watcher is the single highest source of authority within the church. The Supreme Watcher is believed to be appointed directly by Helm himself.
Below the Supreme Watcher is the Council of Helm. This council is composed of five Theocrats, one based in each of the cities of Cradia, and one in the town of Sanctity where the Order is headquartered.
The complete list of ranks of the Order are as follows:
Supreme Watcher: Highest rank of the Order, believed to be directly appointed by Helm.
Theocrat: High-ranking member, representative of the Order within a settlement.
Prelate: Investigators for the Order.
High Guardian: Commanders of temple Guardians.
High Watcher: Commanders of Watchers.
High Gauntlet: Head of the Gauntlets.
Guardian: Trusted members of the Order, assigned the task of protecting the temples from those who would seek to defile it.
Watcher: Members of the Order assigned to bolster local guard forces. In Sanctity, they are the sole guard force of the town. A distinguished Watcher will either be promoted to High Watcher or Guardian, depending on their service.
Gauntlet: Clerics of Helm, sent out to spread His message to the masses.
Squire: New entrants to the Order who are determined to become Watchers.
Scribe: New entrants to the Order who are determined to become Gauntlets.
History
The Order of the Silver Gauntlet was founded sometime during the Age of Darkness. It has existed since before history was documented, but tales of yore mentioned the brave knights of the Order, rushing to defend the weak from the powers who fought to tear the world asunder. The Order has many counterparts on the other continents, such as the Order of the Black Lance in Bevalonia, who serve Helm's equivalent in the Enkeleren pantheon, Hetris.
At some point later in the Age of Darkness, the Order managed to imprison Demogorgon, preventing the Crown Prince of Demons from wreaking further havoc on the world. It took the combined power of thousands of Gauntlets to restrain him, and eventually banish him back to the Abyss at the beginning of the Age of Light.
During the reign of the Yonad Dynasty, the Archdevil Mammon left his home in Minauros to oversee the conquests of his chief general Qhiesis. Members of the Order of the Silver Gauntlet attempted to put a stop to Mammon, facing the Lord of the Third atop the tower of Vuthigraz, the place from which he had surveyed his realm within the Prime Material Plane. Although the Order's assault on the tower was not successful from a strategic point of view, it achieved the Order's goals in forcing Mammon to retreat back into the hells.
When the town of Sanctity was formed around the collection of temples in the area, the Order was recruited as the official guard force of the town.
