Vanara (Va-nar-ra)

Basic Information

Anatomy

Vanara appear as monkey-like humanoids, with a coat of fur, a prehensile tail and an ape-like face. Their coat of fur can range wildly in pigmentation and thickness, though most modern Vanara are short-coat due to the temperature. Some Vanara have more human-like faces than others, the reasons for which are poorly understood.

Growth Rate & Stages

Similar to humans in many aspects, the Vanara mature slightly faster as they are considered adults at the age of fourteen instead of sixteen. Despite this difference, humans do not seem to have a problem with the age disparity, unlike how they view the Nythrai. Unlike humans, however, Vanara are actually the 'ascended' form of the Monkey Goblin, a relative to the Goblinoid species of Kalogir. While one can be born Vanara, most have to achieve the state via decades of meditation and self-reflection.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Hailing from the thick jungles of Koryo, Vanara have excellent low-light vision from the eons before Vanara mastered fire. This ability aided the primitive Vanara in their hunts and general navigation of the jungles, though today their lack of true darkvision has become a sore point for some Vanara.

Civilization and Culture

History

Early in the Age of Bronze, the secrets of Bronze working made its way to eastern Kalogir and Koryo, to the lands of the Vanara. By trading, the then Monkey-Goblin Vanara could gain access to copper while trading out their tin, bringing them into a cross-continent trade network. As the Bloodplague came to an end only a century later, this trade would flourish, bringing great wealth to the Vanaran lands and seeing the birth of the petty kingdoms of Koryo. Hundreds of years would go by until the single greatest event in the history of Koryo, the Enlightenment of Vanar, the first Monkey Goblin to achieve the state and form of the Vanara. With this event came the founding of Vanar's monastery, Aphesu, and the flocking of hundreds of hopefuls to their teachings.
In 991 BE, a series of events would come to be known as the 'Year of Vanar', as Vanar and their disciples stepped in to resolve multiple catastrophes, such as the dragon attack on Hanju. These events would lead to Vanar's teachings spreading all across Koryo and even to the lands of Kalogir, reshaping Vanaran culture forever. By 1035 BE, Vanar had managed to usurp the powers of the petty kings, and unite Koryo under a Republic, led by the enlightened, though they would die shortly thereafter. After Vanar's death, a small power struggle ensued within Aphesu as three different disciples with different ideas for the future would clash, with only one coming out as the victor. This individual, named Khanu, would seek to install Vanara leaders in every community, in order to ensure that the people would be led by the truly enlightened. This act extended the Republic's reach from regional to local community levels, farther than Vanar wanted, and was quickly abused by some of the 'enlightened'.
In 1177 BE, the Republic of Koryo was so vastly beyond what Vanar had attempted to create that it was almost laughable. Through perversions of Vanar's teachings a political faction in the Koran Senate managed to convince the rest of the Senate that they need to bring enlightenment to other species, as Vanar had done for them. This led to the Koran Republic's invasion and subsequent colonization of the Ohruk tribe of Vrol on Ahuduir, which would become known as one of the worst sapient rights eras in history. Shortly after arriving Federal agents would begin experimenting on the Ohruk, attempting to figure out how to 'enlighten' the 'savages' they had conquered. These experiments would be ghastly and yield no results, leading to the prevailing Koran theory that the Ohruk were unable to be enlightened, making them less than a person. The subsequent treatment of the Ohruk by the Koran would eventually lead to the Republic's downfall.
Between the years of 1273 BE and 1287 BE the Koran Republic would seek to bring all Vanara under the one government, by force if necessary. These 'Vanaran Wars of Unification' would see almost all of the Vanara brought under the banners of the Republic, though a few larger nations on Kalogir managed to resist the Federal armies. These conflicts also saw the expansion of the Ahuduir colonies, as many Vanara had emigrated outside of the colonial borders. This would mark the territorial height of the Koran Republic, as only a hundred years later the Long Summer would begin.
As the Long Summer began, the Vanara would choke under the weight of their government, as food was placed into Federal stockpiles and guarded by the military for distribution at the government's behest. This would make the coming famine cause more damage as the government was too slow to react, leading to further unrest. It was also during this time when the Ohruk of the Koran colonies began to organize into rebellious bands, as they were often the ones left without food so that Vanara could eat. Things came to a head in 118 LS as waves of famines and refugees tore the Vrol colony apart, as rebels and refugees raided federal stockpiles and killed most Republic agents. Later that same year wide-spread rebellion on Kalogir by the subjugated Kalogiran Vanara would lead to the Federal government shipping Kalogiran stockpiles back to Koryo, and abandoning the Kalogir colonies. Lastly, in 120 LS, as things seemed to somewhat stabilize on Koryo, and order of Vanaran Monks would purge the Republic's government and bring an end to their perversions of Vanar's teachings.
Throughout the Long Summer the Vanara of Ahuduir would migrate and join various different cultures in order to survive, while the Vanara of Kalogir would remain fiercely independent and hostile to Koryo. On the home island of Vanar, the Vanara would fall back into petty kingdoms, often ruled by the so-called 'enlightened', with large monastery-fortresses dominating the centers of cities.
