Arcane Magic
"To cast a spell is to borrow brilliance from the stars."
In the boundless expanse of the night sky lies the foundation of arcane magic: the stars. These celestial reservoirs of arcane energy are intricately connected by invisible currents, forming constellations that serve as blueprints for spellcasting. All living things are imbued with a fragment of this celestial magic, enabling some to wield it innately and others to harness it through study and material conduits.
Stars
As massive concentrations of arcane magic, it is widely believed that each star is unique—a collection of naturally occurring incantations and raw mystical power, held in a seemingly perpetual equilibrium as they surge, roil, expand, and convulse with arcane energy. While most commonly studied on Materia, every plane possesses its own variation of these arcane wellsprings, from the shimmering auroras of Iomlán to the eternally blazing skies of Galzahad.
Strands & The Webway
Each star is interconnected by an intricate network of invisible celestial currents known as the Webway. These connections, individually called Strands, are imperceptible to most but serve as the foundation of arcane spellcasting. The Webway weaves the stars into constellations—patterns that act as blueprints for arcane magic that mortals can draw upon. The Strands themselves are both a marvel and a peril, shifting unpredictably and disrupting constellations.
Constellations
Astrologers—often wizards who devote themselves to the study of the stars—map constellations to unlock new spells and glimpse the universe's design. Each constellation embodies a single spell, with its nature and power determined by the celestial bodies that form it. The stars, however, are fickle masters. Their alignment, brightness, and connections ebb and flow with the turning of the heavens. A constellation that shines brightly one season may grow dim in another, altering the potency of its spells or even making them inaccessible for a time. Thus, a skilled astrologer must remain ever vigilant, for the sky is both a teacher and a tyrant, demanding constant devotion to its mysteries.
Stardust
Scattered across the cosmos, stardust exists in everything and everyone to some degree. In most, it lingers in scant traces, leaving them unable to wield magic naturally. In others, it flourishes, granting them the innate ability to conjure magic without a scholar's understanding of the stars. The masses must rely on the cosmic residue imbued in all things—latent stardust which can be awakened by skilled hands to channel the magic of the cosmos. Materials alone make not a wizard, however, as theirs is a magic that cannot function without comprehension of the stars.
Gazer's Folly
Those who delve too deeply into the cosmos can potentially find themselves afflicted with a perilous condition. While the study of the heavens grants unparalleled insight into the arcane, it also risks drawing the mind’s eye beyond the stars, into the unfathomable void that lies beyond creation. Exposure to this abyss often overwhelms mortal minds, shattering their grip on reality and filling their thoughts with alien whispers, incomprehensible visions, and maddening truths. This condition, known as Gazer's Folly, manifests with symptoms that range from mild paranoia and insomnia to complete mental collapse, as the afflicted struggle to reconcile their fractured perception of existence. Reckless spellcasters who disregard proper protections or delve into the forbidden are the most vulnerable, becoming living warnings of the dangers that accompany cosmic ambition.
Stellar Phenomena
The cosmic cycle also holds wonders and terrors. Cataclysmic events shape the arcane fabric of existence, altering constellations and revealing new spells in their wake.
