After her mother died, her father Luthor became an angry man who beat her
The people of Norvegricus didn't acknowledge it because it's none of their business. Mav would make regular trips into The Wood to be away from home, and visited her mother and grandmother's grave. Here she met Danalyn, a wolf in The Wood who would protect her. When her father remarried Mary, Mav tried to get Mary to stop the abuses. Mary took a stand against Luthor. He no longer abused Mav... that Mary knew about.
Mav spent a lot of time in The Wood, and eventually made friends with a werewolf Pyeter. The abuses continued, more subtly, and Mary believed they had stopped. When Mav came to her again, Mary didn't believe her.
When Mav was 18, Luthor died after drowning in the river. Mav decided she needed to leave home, to be away from the memory of her abuse.
Mary and Mav parted on sour terms, with Mary feeling abandoned and Mav feeling unsupported. Mav ran away to Lupolis with Lin around ten years ago.
She was given a silver short sword by Gewndle, in case of attack by werewolf. Over the years she has become a fine fighter, and worked to become a capable and valuable member of Lupolis.
