Krilloir
The Krilloir are a rarely encountered bipedal alien species from the planet Dahorica. Krilloir are massive muscular beings that outsizes every other Hivivian race, however, they are extremely passive when not provoked. So much in fact that the Krilloir have been forced into the Hivivian to act as heavy tank-like soldiers. They possess phenomenal strength but little intellect.
Biology
Anatomy & physiology
The Krilloir are a large bipedal species, standing approximately 13 feet tall They are cold-blooded and give birth to live-offspring. They have three fingers including an opposable thumb that allows them to use a wide range of tools. Above each hand, they possess two bony spikes, which can be used as brutal melee instruments in combat. Instead of eyes, they possess a fleshy patch on their foreheads, which emits a "thrumming" sound that allows them to map out their surroundings through echolocation. In terms of circulatory system, the Krilloir have a closed network consisting of one heart and blood vessels. Their purple blood is due to Galvitrium. They also possess four lungs that primarily function in a heavy nitrogen-oxygen based atmosphere.
They have thick skin allowing their bodies to survive immense duress, including extreme temperatures, harsh environmental conditions, and even physical damage allowing them to survive several direct hits with rocket-propelled grenades and block tank shells with their hands. Their gray colorization provides them with great camouflage. Krilloir speech is heard by most species as a flat, ponderous monotone. Since their subtlety can lead to misunderstandings with other species, the krilloir prefix all their statements with a clarifying emotion, such as 'regretfully' or 'enthusiastically'.
Genetics
The Krilloir have a unique genetic structure, built around extensive redundancy and resilience. This has allowed them to thrive in the harsh conditions on their home planet of Dahorica. Their DNA is composed of multiple copies of each essential gene, giving them a level of biological robustness unparalleled by most species.
One major advantage of this genetic makeup is the Krilloir's ability to recover from grievous wounds. Due to their multiple gene copies, they are able to heal quickly and effectively, even from injuries that would be fatal for other species. This has made them formidable in battle and difficult to kill.
Another benefit is their resilience in extreme environments. The Krilloir are able to survive in environments that are lethal to most other life forms, such as high radiation, heavy gravity, or extreme temperatures. However, there is also a downside to this complex genetic structure. The Krilloir's primitive intelligence makes it difficult for them to adapt quickly to new situations or learn complex tasks without guidance. They rely heavily on their masters for direction and instruction, and without it, they can struggle to survive on their own.
Reproduction and Life cycle
The Krilloir reproduce through interal fertilization via sexual intercourse, producing a single offspring at a time. The gestation period is approximately three Earth years long, an impressive wait even compared to other Hivivian races, but it allows the fetus to fully develop the muscular and skeletal structure needed to survive Dahorica's punishing gravity. When a Krilloir cub is born, it weighs around 300lb., already possessing formidable strength. After the birth, the newborn is immediately taken under the wing of a designated master for instruction and guidance.
Young Krilloir do not have much independence during their early years. They are taught basic survival skills and conditioned to obey their masters without question. Most Krilloir live up to 400 years and reach maturity around their 50th year. This prolonged adolescence is utilized to shape the young Krilloir into effective combatants and workers, while also ensuring that they develop unflinching loyalty towards the Hivivian Empire.
During their mature phase, which can last up to three centuries, Krilloir serve as unwavering soldiers and laborers for the empire. They are often sent to the most treacherous conflict zones due to their impressive resilience and strength. Despite their lack of speed, their immense physical power and durability make them formidable opponents in battle.
In the last stages of their lives, older Krilloir simply just die. This is a natural and accepted part of the Krilloir life cycle. As their organs begin to fail and their once formidable strength wanes.
Diet
The Krilloir's diet remains a mystery, as they have never been observed consuming food in the presence of other species. This has led to various theories about their nutritional needs and preferences.
One theory suggests that the Krilloir may absorb nutrients from their environment, much like plants do. This would explain their resilience in extreme environments, as they could simply extract what they need from the air or soil around them. This also fits with their primitive intelligence, as they may not have the ability to hunt or gather food like other species. Another theory proposes that the Krilloir may consume a specific type of plant or animal native to Dahorica that has yet to be discovered by the wider Hivivian community. It is possible that this species is hidden deep within Dahorica's dense forests making it difficult for others to observe.
Some also speculate that the Krilloir may have a symbiotic relationship with another species on Dahorica, where one provides nutrients for the other. This could explain why they have not been observed eating in public - they may only consume food during private interactions with this unknown species.
There are even theories suggesting that the Krilloir do not need to consume physical sustenance at all and instead feed off some form of energy or essence in their surroundings. While there is no concrete evidence to support this hypothesis, it cannot be completely ruled out given the mysterious nature of these creatures.
One thing is clear - whatever their diet may be, it is well-suited for their survival on Dahorica and contributes to their formidable strength and resilience. The true source of their sustenance may remain a mystery for now, but it only adds to the enigma surrounding these powerful beings.
Biological variation
The Krilloir are a species that defies traditional categorization. While most species have a set physical appearance and characteristics, the Krilloir are capable of extensive biological variation. This is due to their redundant genetic structure, which allows for unique combinations and mutations to occur within the population.
One of the most noticeable differences among Krilloir is their size. While the average height for a Krilloir is around 13 feet, there have been recorded instances of individuals reaching heights of up to 15 feet. This significant range in size showcases the vast potential for growth within this species. Other physical attributes that vary among Krilloir include muscularity and skin color. Some individuals may be more muscular or leaner than others, depending on their lifestyle and environment. However, it is their skin color that shows the most diversity among this species.
Krilloir skin can range from deep grays to more subtle light grays. The variations in skin color are believed to be influenced by environmental factors on Dahorica. The planet's unique atmospheric conditions and varying compositions of its soil can impact how much sunlight and nutrients reach individual Krilloir during their development, resulting in different pigmentation patterns.
Some theories also suggest that certain colors may provide advantages or disadvantages in specific environments, leading to a natural selection process for certain traits. For example, darker-skinned Krilloir may be better suited for warmer climates with intense sunlight, while lighter-skinned ones may thrive in colder regions with less sunlight. In addition to physical differences, there are also variations in behavior among Krilloir due to their genetics. Some individuals may exhibit more aggressive tendencies while others may be calmer and more docile.
Psychology & Intelligence
To other races, the Krilloir come off as unintelligible animals. This has allowed them to be easily controlled and manipulated. However, their intelligence just can’t be comprehended by outside observers because it operates on a fundamentally different level. Unlike most species, the Krilloir do not communicate through verbal language, but through a complex system of body movements and pheromonal releases. This form of communication is difficult to interpret for those unfamiliar with their ways, leading to misconceptions about their intelligence.
The Krilloir exhibit a collective mentality, often acting in unison without any apparent hierarchy or leadership. This has led some scholars to theorize that the Krilloir may possess a form of hive mind or group consciousness where knowledge and experiences are shared collectively among individuals. This system allow the Krilloir to function effectively as a unified force, responding to threats or changes in their environment rapidly and consistently. Their group actions often seem coordinated beyond the abilities of many individual creatures indicating a high level of sophistication in their communication structure.
Culture
The Krilloir do not have any known culture in the traditional sense. They do not create art or music nor do they have any written language or form of education. There are no individual houses or shelters, no recognizable religious practices, and no identifiable recreational activities. This has further fueled the misconception of Krilloir being primitive or unintelligent. However, to dismiss the Krilloir as culturally void would be a grave misunderstanding.
Their culture is implicit, not explicit. Instead of constructing physical monuments or producing works of art, their cultural expressions are manifested in their actions and behaviors. To the untrained eye, a synchronized movement of Krilloir might just seem like random action, but to those who understand them, these movements are akin to a mesmerizing ballet, each jerk and shudder telling a story of their collective past and present. They possess a rich oral tradition, handed down through generations not through words but through the intricate language of movement and pheromones - a dance of history and wisdom that speaks volumes about their origins, experiences, and innate knowledge of their world.
Language
The Krilloir do not have a spoken or written language as other races do. However, this does not mean they are incapable of vocal communication. Like many species, the Krilloir possess vocal cords and can make sounds, but their vocal range is limited and their voices are soft and often difficult to hear.
Instead, the Krilloir communicate through a complex system of body movements and pheromonal releases. Each movement and release carries a specific meaning, from simple greetings to detailed instructions on how to complete a task. This mode of communication is highly efficient for the Krilloir, allowing them to convey complex information quickly and accurately without the need for words.
Their neural networks are finely tuned to detect subtle changes in body language and pheromones, making it possible for them to easily interpret each other's messages. To an outsider, these movements may seem random or choreographed, but each one holds significant meaning within the Krilloir community.
It is important to note that their lack of written or spoken language does not mean that the Krilloir lack intelligence or capacity for complex thought. Their unique form of communication requires a high level of understanding and cooperation among individuals.
In certain situations where verbal communication is necessary, such as interacting with other races, some Krilloir have learned to speak in basic terms using their limited vocal range. However, this form of communication is still secondary to their primary non-verbal mode.
Architecture
Krilloir architecture is rather basic, with nearly all krilloir living in communal dwellings carved out of the sturdy, native rock formations of Dahorica. These dwellings, often mistaken for natural caves by outsiders, are meticulously excavated over several generations of Krilloir. The interiors of these dwellings echo the Krilloir's collective mentality. There is no concept of personal space or private quarters; instead, a harmonious blend of shared living and working areas dominate the layout. Despite its apparent simplicity, Krilloir architecture is surprisingly sophisticated in terms of sustainability and environmental harmony. They make use of natural ventilation systems by skillfully manipulating Dahorican wind currents through strategically placed openings.
Tools and technologies
The Krilloir are a preindustrial civilization by Yictan's technological ranking system, but in reality, they have developed no visible technology as it is currently understood. The Krilloir lack any innate understanding of physics or mechanics. They do not possess the curiosity or ingenuity needed to explore and experiment with their environment. Their focus on communal living and group survival has left little room for individual creativity or exploration.
As a result, the Krilloir do not appear to be capable of developing technology in any sense. They have no machines, tools, or weapons. They do not manipulate materials or resources for practical purposes. However, this does not mean that the Krilloir are completely devoid of tools and technologies. Instead, they have developed unique ways of adapting to their environment without relying on traditional forms of technology.
Society
The Krilloir society is as complex and baffling as their method of communication. It defies traditional societal structures found in many other races, operating instead on a system of collective individuality. There are no leaders or subordinates, no hierarchies or caste systems in the Krilloir society. Instead, every individual is considered an integral part of the society contributing equally to its functioning.
Their society functions as one large unit. There is no concept of parenthood or family among them - the young are cared for by the collective, educated through observational learning, yet there is a special form of kinship bond between pairs of Krilloir, often formed during their juvenile periods. It is not a bond built on blood or kinship, but rather a profound understanding and acceptance of one another. This bond persists throughout their life, acting as a vital element in their collective consciousness.
The idea of ownership is also alien to them; resources are not shared or horded but rather used as and when they are needed by the collective. The Krilloir do not 'take' or 'give' but simply 'use'. They do not farm or cultivate their food; instead, they forage in the wilds of Dahorica, gathering what is available and leaving what is not required for future needs.
Their lack of competitive behavior does not denote a lack of ambition but merely a different understanding of progress. The Krilloir measure development not in terms of material accumulation or technological advancement but in the holistic growth and harmony of their society.
Trade and economics
The Krilloir economy is as unique and nuanced as their societal structure. They have no currency or system of trade as most other civilizations comprehend it. Instead, they operate on a model of resource fluidity within their collective. Goods are not bartered or exchanged but are used wherever they are needed the most. It's quite common to observe the movement and utilization of resources amongst the Krilloir. A freshly harvested batch of Dahorican succulents, for instance, may be consumed by some, while others use it for medicinal purposes, and still others use the remaining portions for structural maintenance of their dwellings. All this occurs seamlessly without any outward negotiation or conflict as the Krilloir are attuned to the needs of their community, and resources naturally flow towards where they are most required.Conflict
The Krilloir themselves do not engage in wars or conflicts, and have no military. However, since their incorporation into the Hivivian Empire, conflicts with other races have been inevitable. Their pacific nature does not signify weakness or vulnerability.
When confronted with aggressive actions by other races, they react collectively rather than individually. Under threat, the Krilloir can emit a unified ultrasonic signal that interferes with the sensory perception of the aggressor. This unique defense mechanism can confuse and disorient attackers, providing the Krilloir time to retreat to the safety of their dwellings.
This tactic also helps the Krilloir maintain a harmonious relationship with the often volatile Dahorican fauna. The ultrasonic signal, though disorienting to most sentient species, has a calming effect on the native wildlife. This symbiotic relationship between the Krilloir and their environment is another testament to their unique understanding of balance and co-existence.
Role within the Hivivian
The Krilloir, being a passive race, have never engaged in warfare, until their forced incorporation into the Hivivian Empire. As a result of their tremendous size and strength, they have been utilized as heavy shocktroopers within the Hivivian military. Despite their aversion to violence, the Krilloir have proven to be formidable warriors on the battlefield. They possess immense physical strength and durability, making them ideal for close combat situations. Their thick hides can withstand most conventional weapons, and their massive size allows them to easily overpower opponents.
Most Krilloir are not armed with traditional weapons. Instead, they rely on their own physical abilities. However, some Krilloir have been trained to wield large plasma cannons specially-designed for their size. Their presence on the battlefield often serves as a deterrent against aggression from other races. The sheer size and strength of even one Krilloir can make an enemy think twice before engaging in battle.
Relations with Other Hivivian Species
The Krilloir, being a passive and solitary species, have little to no relations with the other Hivivian races. This is due to a combination of factors, including their pacifistic nature. Despite being incorporated into the Hivivian Empire, the Krilloir do not have any representation within the Hivivian High Council. This is because they are seen as nothing more than biological weapons by most other races within the empire. Even the Gnimgian, who are often used as cannon fodder in battles, hold a higher status than the Krilloir.
This disregard for the Krilloir can also be attributed to their lack of proper intelligence. While they possess great physical strength and unique abilities, they do not possess traditional forms of intelligence like language or advanced problem-solving skills. As such, they are often viewed as primitive animals incapable of higher thinking and reasoning. However, this perception is not entirely accurate. The Krilloir may not communicate through language like other Hivivian races, but they have a deep understanding of their environment and an innate sense of balance and coexistence. Their lack of traditional intelligence does not make them any less valuable or important.
Despite these challenges in relations with other Hivivian species, the Krilloir have managed to maintain a somewhat peaceful coexistence within the empire. They continue to fulfill their duties as heavy shocktroopers when needed, but otherwise prefer to remain isolated from other races.
Their unique abilities also serve as a deterrent against aggression from enemies outside the empire. The mere presence of a few Krilloir on the battlefield can make potential invaders think twice before attacking.
