Hjiaril
The Hjiaril were massive, ziggurat-like pyramids constructed by an ancient civilization of Sauruanian that inhabited the Esox Islands thousands of years ago. Hjiarils are almost always seen in perfectly symmetrical complexes, sometimes with more than one pyramid connected together by elevated stone walkways. The stone throughout is intricately carved with geometrical patterns, as well as likenesses of the ancient Sauruanian themselves. From the scale, intricacy, and distribution of these Hjiarils, it is clear that the ancient Sauruanian were highly advanced with a prosperous civilization. Sometime before the First Esox Kingdom, during an event known as the Great Collapse, the society became extinct, leaving behind these Hjiarils as the ruins of their once great civilization. The methods of constructing these expanses were also lost during this period.
Due to their superb architectural design, many Hjiarils still remain.
History
Prior to the calamity known as the Great Collapse, the ancient Sauruanian, a people with a rich mythology and cultural heritage, dominated the Esox Islands and built huge temple complexes and pyramids. Their capital was Jurjkurioriean on the Jurjkorean River – the site of modern-day Jurk. They were related to the preceding cultures in the basin of the Esox Islands such as the culture of Jurkjkoriean whose building style they adopted and adapted. Sites involving Sauruanian pyramids include:
- Jurk
- Surkorzzian
- Aumemzziean
- Xurkoria
- Trijkoreanian
All throughout the Esox Islands as a testament to their might, Hjiarils are built in such a way that they could stand for millennia, with many still intact to this day. The knowledge of how these ancient Sauruanian managed to create such lasting, permanent structures on top of the ever-shifting marshes of the Esox Islands has been lost ever since the Great Collapse, with even the Hierarchy's attempts failing to produce more than half-sunken villas and decaying prisons. Though one might expect modern Sauruanian to look back at this period of time longingly, many view their ancestors actions as misguided, and believe that they were built out of a fear of death or forgetting, and built them with the idea that they could reject change and endure forever. The Great Collapse brought about a dramatic change, however. Though the exact events that transpired remain a mystery, what followed was a massive ideological shift in Sauruanian society.
