Archivist Initiative

The Initiative is a term which refers to the many nanomachine-based Archivists scattered across the universe. Loosely governed by consensus, they aim to preserve history and the technological/cultural data of all life.

Culture

Highly prizes scientific and cultural advances. Heavily reliant on technology and generally violence-averse.   With their level of technology and deep knowledge of many subjects, the Initiative is careful not to thoughtlessly harm or interfere in the affairs of younger species except in very specific situations.

Public Agenda

The Archivist Initiative is less a state and more of a very large and well-funded history/science preservation program.

Assets

A few planets, habitats, and a ringworld are under the direct ownership of the Archivists. However, most of its assets are spread across the universe, in the form of powerful circular starships that houses a large portion of its population.

History

The Archivist Initiative is ancient, extremely so. The Initiative was formed from another, long-irrelevant civilization remembered as the XZK73 Machine Empire, well over a million years prior.

Demography and Population

As the name suggests, the Archivist Initiative is primarily populated by the Archivists. As these nanomachines are surprisingly slow to reproduce, the populace is both small in number and dispersed extremely widely all over the known universe. A number can be found working closely with the Federation.

Territories

The Archivist Initiative does not particularly concern itself with empire-building, and as such maintains de facto control over a few handfuls of systems. About twenty planets, a hundred habitats and stations, and a single ringworld can be classified as Initiative territory. However, a great deal of information-gathering and exertion of influence is possible throughout the known universe thanks to a wide net of outposts and large, circular starships.

Military

The Archivist Initiative does not maintain a conventional army or navy like its neighbors do. In the rare cases where the Initiative is forced to fight, powerful and well-hidden stationary defenses protect their homes while large yet terrifyingly nimble starships (most commonly described as a semi-circle centered on a large sphere) unleash the power of their aptly-named decomposer strips. These thin, unimposing-looking arrays rapidly and violently tear apart energy shielding and densely-packed armor with beams of exotic energy which can track even the nimblest missiles and starfighters. Archivist ships are difficult to board, given that passageways and important facilities are often designed without consideration for larger, less malleable lifeforms. In an infantry-level firefight, Archivists use more conventional high-frequency lasers and can turn parts of their body into a dense carapace or sharp objects. However, their lack of a dedicated surface army limits their contributions in a test of hard power, and their pacifist tendencies tend to see members of the Initiative derided for being "clumsy" or "slow to react".
