Tolana Royal Guard

The Tolana Royal Guard are battle-proven warriors that have completed rigorous training from birth. While they are destined as warriors on their name day, they don’t earn the Royal Guard distinction until they come of age. In order to be selected to the Royal Guard, the warriors must battle each other in the arena, the most victorious ones earning a chance to earn the title. As the ultimate test, once they win, the Grand Eminence orders the winner to kill one of the other soldiers. Those that hesitate are eliminated from contention, while those that begin the task without question are selected. Sometimes, the Grand Eminence allows for the kill, and other times he stops the warrior as he is about to make the kill.     While, in principle, any Tolana warrior could become a Royal Guard member, the majority of them descend from a long line of guard members in their clans. Having a member of a clan as a member of the Royal Guard brings prestige and reputation to a clan. The ancestral planes favor clans carrying on the traditions and hard work of the ancestors. Throughout a young warrior’s life, his or her ancestors will motivate and guide the child to aspire to the guard. Thus, they are groomed for the position from an early age, having an advantage over those unfamiliar with the Royal Guard traditions, mindsets, and skills.   The Royal Guards serve until death. The unit is highly structured, with a strict hierarchy or orders and commands. The guards are allowed to form attachments, but with the knowledge that the Grand Eminence and his Royal Clan always come first. At times, the Grand Eminence could test this, depending on the service of the guard and his paranoia at the time. Many guards avoid attachments for this reason. Guards are highly trained and expected to die for the family at any moment. Everyone is seen as a potential enemy. If a guard member makes a mistake, the guard member is brutally punished. If they make a second mistake, they are killed.
