Titanium

The Tolana main source of power is titanium, and it has drove many decisions for Tolana conquest, exploration, and expansion of their empire.
  Titanium is used to construct Tolana battleships and Tolana mechs. Tolana battleships and trade ships are used to assert Tolana dominance within their galaxy and beyond. The mechs are built for on-the-ground combat, allowing the Tolana to release large weapons with layers of steel protection. Titanium is the backbone of every Tolana ship and many of the weapons.
More prolific than a war fleet or weapon, however, are the small mechs that function in day-to-day Tolana life. Many tasks and procedures in Tolana culture are automated by small mechs and large mechs. Delivery of items, processing of laundry, food preparation- much of it is done, with precision, by highly specialized mechs. Each clan has their own mech or a few mechs, dedicated to relieving the family of chores. These mechs function to allow the Tolana to focus on more pressing world concerns, as well as the development of personal skills and hobbies.
The quest to continue to build war ships to small mechs took the Tolana on a quest for titanium across their galaxy. Their first target were the Dakuians, experienced miners who could mine an empty planet for the titanium reserves. Proving successful, they set up several outposts, all providing a steady supply of titanium.
Once the Rhonains won independence, the Tolana lost their mech labor source, setting back essential production. This took them to earth, where they heartily defeated Earth and set up Mech factories, Earthlings proving an easy task for domination and compliance, given their distressed state before the invasion.
The Visak invasion changed everything, within a few months wiping out several titanium mines, Earth labor supplies, and a Tolana city. The Tolana, backed into an unexpected corner, turned to the Soli for help.
