Qabalrin Elves

More than forty millennia ago, the Qabalrin elves were the first mortals to discover the great mysteries of necromancy. They are said to be responsible for the creation of the first vampires. They dwelled in an elven city existed over a thousand miles south-east of what is modern-day Stormreach.

The Shapers of Night and Unspoken were two of the most powerful and prominent sects within the many factions of the Ring of Storms. The Unspoken focused on conjuration, dealing with spirits and fiends. The Shapers of Night focused on necromancy as a means of securing personal power—creating some the first vampires. The two factions clashed, and the Unspoken were the victors as they managed to seal the vampires in various tombs across Xen'drik.

Little more than a week after the last vampire was sealed away, Siberys dragonshards rained down on the valley like hail. Their city-state was soon destroyed as the Heart of Siberys, a giant Siberys dragonshard, fell from the sky and the resulting impact created the Ring of Storms. As the shards fell, the wizards of the Unspoken managed to weave a spell to form the raw fury of their dying people into a dark well of souls with divine power. Soon after, dragons arrived and bound the gestalt souls of the dead Qabalrin to the Heart of Siberys, binding it with power from the Silver Flame.

The Qabalrin were powerful conjurers and necromancers. The giants believed that the Qabalrin's magic was evil, and derived from the Shadow of their version of the Sovereign of Light and Law, Ouralon. When their city was destroyed, the giants declared that Ouralon was punishing the elves for deriving their magic from his Shadow.

Legacy

Long after the Qabalrin were obliterated, some remnant of their magic was discovered by the Umbragen drow. They named this font of dark energy the Umbra, and the shadow elves draw power from it to fuel their civilization and fight back the aberrant forces that threaten them.

The traditions of the Shapers of Night within the Qabalrin, as preserved in the sanguineous tome, are rumored to have inspired the dark practices of the line of Vol, and the faith of the Blood of Vol.
