Congenital Corruption of the Midnighters

In the dispassion of disillusionment, the ex-chaplain and depressed blockhead we now know as the Navy Mother took to exploring the ruins of Inom. In those depths, she discovered the truth of things, her tribe became the most powerful threat to the other peoples' way of living, which they still do not even know yet.

Navy had been exploring the depths for decades before discovering the Brier, delving deeper and deeper, seeking truth where her schooling in the ways of the blockhead faith's orthodoxy had been dashed across the spires of Inom. She would eat from the provisions vacuum-sealed by the ancients in their pots, from the corpses of other delvers expired by trap, from her own (soon-to-be) tribe's dead.   And semi-afflicted by spoiled-food-induced delirium, she arrived the the Taproot of the World, where all her questions would be answered. Here was the Brier. Here was the reason. Here was the solution. Here was the truth. Here was a new era.   After her audience with the Brier, Navy announced to her former underlings that it was time to form a tribe like the others have, and that this tribe would worship the Brier. In exchange, the Brier instructed Navy how to eke out a living so damned far from the surface. And so the Midnighters were inherently corrupted at creation. The Opulence's Thorns were established as the cult to which each Midnighter is a member as soon as Navy conceived of converting other tribes or even other species to the cause.
