Yellow Light Over Indar Report in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

Yellow Light Over Indar

The Madness of the Void Spreads

General Summary

It is March 1st, 1000 PCE. The Party has explored the Village of Indar, where they discovered evidence that the Vril were causing trouble by unleashing a strange corrupting power called “the yellow light.”
After quelling the madness in Indar, the Party moved on to Tabazan, where the after-effects of the earlier pulse of the Deathbringer Wave had caused a similar situation to what they had encountered in Indar. After investigating rumors of a mysterious outlander recovering in an infirmary in Tabazan’s slums, the PCs discovered Captain Thorpe and a warrior in need of medical care.
After fighting their way out of a cult compound that turned out to be a lair for worshippers of a foul being known as the King in Yellow (and in league with the Vril), the Party took the stranger and Thorpe back to the Tercelet for recovery.

Madness of Indar

The Party entered the burning village of Indar looking for the Chimalli agent known as Captain Odem Atzmo and soon realized that many of the townsfolk were either dead or overcome with murderous insanity. The PCs witnessed random acts of violence (and the results of such acts) and eventually came into contact with the village master at arms, Jumi Kijan. Master Kijan explained that the madness had been unleashed during the previous evening by a performance staged by a group of traveling players (The Court of the Yellow King). At Kijan’s request, the Party ventured to the town square where the performance had occurred and where a mob of feral, mutated townsfolk were still massed and posing a danger to the town. He also asked the PCs to save his friend, Prefect Satzu Tagel.
On the way to the stage, the Party discovered a handbill announcing a performance of The King in Yellow, led by “Lady Kalima,” the Vril sorceress whom the Party had encountered in the Trinity Desert weeks earlier. At the amphitheater, the PCs carved their way through the crowd of mutated miscreants and managed to reach Satzu, who was muttering about the return of the yellow king and other mad ravings. The PCs also faced the mutated form of Captain Odem, who had been transformed into a Void-touched monstrosity of tentacles and fangs. When Jayne struck him with an obliterating blow from the Moon Blade, his mutations reversed, and he was restored to health.
Odem told the Party about what had happened in Tabazan and Indar and explained that he knew for sure that the ruler of Tabazan, Prince Marduk, had handed Lady Orphea over into the custody of the Vril. He gave the PCs his clay credit chit stamped with the trader’s mark of a place called The Tall House (worth 150 sp), a public house where he had stayed while on mission in Tabazan. He mentioned that, before the Deathbringer Wave, he was trying to discover the whereabouts of a Merikan traveler who had been captured by the Vril operating in the east side slums of Tabazan. As for Kalima and The Court of the Yellow King, Odem and Kijan both believed they were headed north towards the Vale River settlements.

Investigating in Tabazan

Joined by a new member, Fulbeard the Seneschal, the Party entered Tabazan on the next day, under cover of darkness. They had put the Tercelet down in the forest to the north of the city and tried to sneak in the shadows of the pre-dawn. In spite of their stealthy efforts, however, they were spotted by town guards and ended up killing one before causing other guards to flee. The PCs found themselves in a ghost town, much larger than Indar had been, but more desolate.
They made for the southern part of town seeking out the area of Tabazan that Prince Marduk had permitted the Vril to control. As the morning light broke, they discovered more citizens beginning to roam the bloody and burnt out streets and eventually saw a Vril patrol leaving a traders’ emporium (Mander’s Emporium). After ambushing the patrol, the PCs interrogated a prisoner and learned that the Vril were keeping the Merikan traveler Odem had mentioned in a place called the House of the Pale Rider.
The party then entered the emporium to investigate what the Vril were doing there. They met Zoran Mander and discovered the Vril had hired him to identify the traveler’s possessions. After negotiating a sale, the Party convinced Mander to hand over the gear. Intimidated by the Party and unable to accept payment in chattels, Mander told them he awaited cash payment at the Turquoise Palace. Noticing the head of the Star Rod amongst the gear, Jayne took it into his own possession.

House of the Pale Rider

The Party went to the House of the Pale Rider, which appeared to be some kind of charitable religious cult devoted to serving the sick and immiserated people of Tabazan’s slum district. After asking around and feigning interest in joining the cult, the Party determined which building the stranger had been taken to and managed to sneak in. The tiny out building was made to look like a meat locker, but had a hidden trap door concealing a cavernous lair leading to a sinister chapel devoted to the King in Yellow. After getting the drop on the lair guards, they found the chapel sanctum guarded by Vril warriors bearing the sigil of the King in Yellow. Within the sickly yellow light of the shrine, the Party found Captain Thorpe and "the Stranger" bound to the base of a grotesque altar.
Edmund had remained with the ship, but decided to catch up and join the Party after all. He went to the Tall House and asked about the Merikan traveler in the hopes of rendezvousing with the Party by following the same trail. A young guide named Anakee showed him the way and brought him to the House of the Pale Rider, where he discovered cultists and Vril warriors massing to trap the Party, who had snuck into an underground hideaway. Edmund took up position on a nearby rooftop and prepared to join the imminent battle.
After a fierce street fight, the Party stood alone in command of the field of battle. They took Thorpe and the Stranger back to the ship.

Delora Revealed

With Fulbeard’s medical care, the stranger regained consciousness and introduced himself as “Tobias.” The PCs discussed Tobias’s gear, and Jayne insisted that he must keep the head of the Star Rod in his own possession. This caused some friction, but Tobias grudgingly accepted the situation (for the time being).
Adelle Mirodar entered the room and removed her helmet (and tinted visor). She arched her neck backwards and shook her head from side to side as her voluminous red hair fell in tangled locks to frame her face. Looking the very image of a Pre-Raphaelite muse, she bore a subtle grin, which broke into a wide smile as she greeted Tobias. “Hello! I’m relieved to see you have recovered. My name is Adelle Mirodar. Pleased to make your acquaintance!”
Tobias was amazed to see Phoenix Archon Delora Delarmi enter the room, but maintained a neutral expression. As with Jayne and the Star Rod, he decided to play along with Delora’s charade.
