Leader of War Councils, Ekchuah Kaan (a.k.a. Usukan, "Large Spirited One")

As the Vril Invasion force continues to expand its control of the Pachuco region, the Pachucese turn to their leader of war councils, a clan chief known as Usukan, for leadership. A veteran commander of the Southern Jungle War against the United Kingdoms of the Amber Coast, Usukan's pedigree as a soldier is not in question. The southern war happened thirty years ago, however, and Usukan, now pushing sixty years old, is no longer a daring leader of men. As the tides of war have turned against the Pachucese, the voices calling for the removal of Usukan's command have grown more insistent.

Usukan has organized the jungle defences since the beginning of the Vril incursion. It was he who led raids against the first Vril scouts and it was he who organized the garrison that fell defending Trinity. After that defeat, Usukan withdrew the war chiefs back to Pachuco City in hopes of waiting for the jungle monsoon season to weaken and disperse the Vril army. That strategy has not succeeded and it is now the Pachucese, cowering behind their walls, that grow fearful watching their food reserves dwindle.

Personal history

Born to a family of peasant farmers, he was given the name "Ekchuah" (meaning "short stick") at birth. He later earned the style name "Usukan" after leading the triumphal march in Pachuco City celebrating the Pachucese war bands' victory in the war against the Amber Coast. In subsequent years Usukan has become a respected tribal leader in affairs of peace as well as war. Necessarily so, since the last few decades have been peaceful for the idle Pachuco nations. This current campaign against the Vril is surely the conflict for which Usukan will be remembered, and, in spite of growing doubts about his fitness to lead, he is determined to retain command lead his people to victory.

Intellectual Characteristics

Usukan is a learned man, educated in the Spirit Halls of the Sun Spire. In spite of his great reputation as a war leader, his greatest achievements as a public figure have involved the improvement of Pachuco City's agricultural infrastructure, which entailed the construction of irrigation canals and protective dykes to limit seasonal flooding in the lowland plains of Pachuco.

Motivation

Usukan is obsessed with securing his reputation and cannot bring himself to untether his personal pride from the collective fate of his people. Consequently, the war leader is incapable of admitting fault and becomes easily wed to bad decisions in the interest of saving or maintaining face. That being said he is nonetheless a man of honour and integrity with a firm belief in moral goodness.
