The Hall of Bones Report in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

The Hall of Bones

Unearthing the Secrets of the Visitors

General Summary

It is March 2nd, 1000 PCE. The Party defeated a Void Dragon guarding the central shaft of the Voidseal (black pyramid of Tabazan) and determined that they had used the wrong “key” to unlock the chambers near the top of the shaft. Math turned ectoplasmic and had a peek into this area but couldn’t find a way to open the passage for the rest of the Party. They decided to turn their attention to the bottom ledge of the shaft and there discovered an unusual tomb chamber decorated with images related to Visitor myths.

Against the Void Dragon

When the PCs placed the statuary stone orb found among the prison cells into the curved indentation (located at the top ledge), the stone wall partially receded into the floor (only a few inches). At that point a benighted winged serpent emerged from the clouds in the central shaft and attacked the Party. Jayne leaped onto its back and Tobias activated his flight harness to move into the shaft and flank around it. The rest of the Party endured the Void Dragon’s breath weapon: a suffocating vacuum effect that drew the breath from their lungs (leaving almost half the Party crippled).
After the danger was over, Math turned amorphous (using the ectoplasmic shield) to pass through the minute gap in the wall and see an empty chessboard in the immediate corridor beyond the barrier. Further still, he saw cultists of the Yellow King offering prayers in front of bizarre statues, which flanked some kind of great chamber.
When the Void Dragon attempted a flyby attack, it used a wingover maneuver to corkscrew its body and complete a 180 degree turn. While the beast was turned upside down, Jayne failed to maintain his balance and began to fall; however, mid-descent, he activated the Lunar Blade to teleport to a safe ledge. After Everest attempted to soften it up with some alchemical bombs, Tobias charged at the dragon and the Party managed to bring it down. Fulbeard used the rest of his advanced healing abilities to revive the unconscious PCs and NPCs (William, Robb, Oliver, and Adelle) and patch up the wounded party members.

Phoenix Balcony

The Party now decided to explore the last and lowest ledge. It was decorated with a basalt statue of a Phoenix holding a long scepter in its mouth and clutching a cluster of ivory tablets in its talons. The Party noted the difference between this representation of the firebird and the one depicted outside the Voidseal pyramid.

Hall of the Edrolim

In this room, strewn with human bones, the Party uncovered a sealed and trapped tomb containing a fortune in precious gems and metals as well as the remains of a human/machine hybrid. The body was of unusual size and its decayed organic parts mingled with metal plates and web-like wires and circuits. The face of the corpse was hidden by a silver mask, crafted with features resembling Tobias’s own save for cross-shaped slits at the eyes and mouth.
The mask emanated an unidentified metaphysical aura and bore the Tetra Sigil of the Prince’s Hidden Empire, the same sign indelibly marked on Jayne’s right hand (elsewhere referred to as “the Blood Mark of Brightmoon”). When Tobias picked the mask up, the same symbol emerged on his own left hand. Other members of the Party attempted to put the mask on and experienced communication with an unknown intelligence, which referred to itself as “a liar.” Only someone capable of mastering psychic control of the mask was able to learn its abilities and wield them.
Under the mask, amid the decaying skull of the hybrid corpse, the Party found a Neural Net composed of fine fiber optic strands, which Tobias picked up and placed on his own head, at which point it melded into the flesh under his hair.
The room was decorated with paintings depicting a mythic story about the Phoenix and the Visitors and the sarcophagus of the tomb itself was attended by a trio of statues carrying three removable stone objects, a pyramid, a cube, and a pentagonal prism.
