Soul Shards

Psionic crystals echoing the thoughts of the dead

These metaphysical objects emanate faint telepathic auras and represent the incarnated psychic essence of the dead. The North American Party has encountered the soul shards left by extradimensional psychic leeches known as phthisics. These phthisics, known for their ability to suppress psionic powers and negate thoughts, generate soul shards by extracting the raw psychic power released by death trauma. The shards form as the material imprint of this psychic trauma and are coded with the thought essence of a phthisic's unfortunate victims. Margrave Toktamish of Lowdown was bringing victims as sacrifices to the phthisics infesting the Allodee Refuge. He attempted to sacrifice the Party in this fashion, but did not anticipate the PCs putting up a fight and slaying the phthisics in return.

When slain, a phthisic's body loses physical form and leaves behind the monster's personal cache of soul shards. The Party collected the crystals after their encounters with these creatures and planned to one day return them to Lowdown for the surviving friends and relations of those sacrificed upon the ambektar altars of Allodee.
