Mun-Ra Character in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

Mun-Ra

Under Priest of Moonkind (a.k.a. Mister Ra, Mystery)

You strain your eyes peering into darkness as you enter the temple. The earthy scent of hashish smoke mingles with the sound of sultry horns and urgent drums. Somewhere in the shadows a discordant verse plays upon an unseen piano. The pounding of the drums does not drive a beat so much as swing its rhythm through the cascading, atonal melody. Where you come from, this music would be called jazz, but these sounds are different, almost otherworldly.

As your eyes adapt, you begin to perceive shapes moving at the edges of the room: bodies writhing and swaying to the strange, atonal, music. A shroud pulls back from the altar and you see a dark-skinned man standing on the dais in long sapphire robes trimmed with silver accents. He removes a weighty, snake-shaped headdress and gestures for you to sit upon the carpeted floor amidst a menagerie of silent, sweaty acolytes. The man is bald-headed and of advanced age but the twinkle in his eyes and his enigmatic smile bespeak a spirit of youthful vigour.

“I have many names; some call me Mr. Ra; others call me Mr. Re. You can call me Mr. Mystery.”

Within the Dark Sun Sanctum of Azoturia resides a mystical authority of cosmic significance. He is known as an artist, a teacher, and as a spiritual leader. He is also a doomsayer of the New Apocalypse. He is Mun-Ra, leader of the Moonkind and Under-Priest of the Silver Star.

Little is known about Priest Mun-Ra. By his own account he was trained in the Maztan orthodoxy at the Pyramid of the Two Suns. According to Ra, he had an epiphany one night while meditating before the Lodge of the Black Sun. He claims he received a message from outer space, specifically the "Shadow of the Moon." This mysterious message from the void, the revelation of a new and final Apocalypse, turned Mun-Ra toward an unforeseen path of enlightenment and led him to found the Dark Sun Sanctum and begin an exploration of the dark things of the cosmos.

Morality & Philosophy

Mun-Ra has declared that the Earth is destined to be consumed by the cold flames of the Dark Sun. For many years Ra believed this fate could be overcome through the universal atonement of the human race, but further meditations and research have altered this view. To Mun-Ra, the Badlander invasion of the Zone is a portent of a coming doom and a sign that the end of the world is rapidly approaching.

Ra's continuing correspondence with the Moon Shadow Voice has similarly intensified his conviction that the Earth is doomed and led him to conclude that humanity must seek a way to leave this planet and seek a new destiny among the stars. Mun-Ra believes the gods have left tools of potent myth-science hidden in the Deep Zone and that these tools have been gifted to humanity for the purpose of building a Solar Ark with which to escape into the cosmos. Ra has sent members of his Moonkind cult into the Zone in search of these artifacts in the hopes that the Ark can be constructed and launched before it's too late to save the human race from destruction.
