Machine City

Built as the new capital of Georgia District, Machine City (also known as “Electric City” or simply “Machine”) was a marvel of industrialization. Powered by coal and steam technology, Machine brought forth a monumental leap forward in Merikan scientific advancement.   Starting in 990 PCE, The Machine-based Union Steel and Steamworks plant began manufacturing engines and steel rails to connect the eastern core of the Merikan Union with a system of train rails. By 999 PCE secret collaboration with Phoenix Order technicians had completed a project of electrification culminating in the construction of Machine’s very own coal-fired electrical power plant. The involvement of the Phoenix Order was eventually uncovered leading to a public outcry which reportedly angered the Phoenix Archon posted in Memphis.   In the mid summer of 999 PCE a political dispute between the Union and the Phoenix Order led to a brief state of war in which the Phoenix Order destroyed Machine City. This belligerent act was declared retribution for disloyalty and disobedience. Avoiding the destruction of its continental armies, the Union government withdrew its forces and allowed the Phoenix to have its way in Georgia District. The local populace levied their own militias and sustained a defence of Machine long enough for the city to be evacuated. The episode has shaken faith in the dependability of the Union and sparked renewed talk of independence and secession among the other districts and city-states.   Today the ruins of Machine are a massive scavenge yard where the entrepreneurial and the curious alike are drawn to sift through trash in search of treasure.
