Into the Voidseal Report in In the Shadow of Princes | World Anvil

Into the Voidseal

Oliver Chastain is Revealed

General Summary

It is between March 1st and 2nd, 1000 PCE. The Party has rescued Captain Thorpe and a stranger known as Tobias from a secret underground temple devoted to a Vril god known as the King in Yellow. After taking time to rest, the Party returned to Tabazan City later that night and entered the Black Pyramid in order to rescue Orphea and her crew and retrieve the Deathbringer artifact.
Within the pyramid, they rescued many members of the Arcadia crew (including Orphea Chastain) and discovered that “Thorpe” was really Oliver Chastain in disguise (and he’s kind of sorry about the trouble he caused).

Creeping Sargasso

After rescuing Thorpe and Tobias, the Party returned to the Tercelet to report what they had encountered and receive medical care from Fulbeard.
As they were leaving Tabazan earlier in the day, the Party witnessed the activation of the Deathbringer artifact, an act that once more plunged Tabazan into chaos. When they returned to the city later that night (after midnight), they saw a hazy yellow glow resting in the misty air above the city. They also realized that the living sargasso, which had previously inundated the harbour, was now creeping inland into the actual city. Wary of the sargasso hive mind, the Party stayed clear of it, especially when they realized a massive hydra was advancing toward the city center from the sargasso weeds.

Entering the Pyramid

Approaching the base of the pyramid before the arrival of the hydra, the Party found a well worn path leading up one of the faces of the structure and followed it to discover a large puzzle cube of stone blocking the way. They used a set of letter tiles to spell “Zoroaster” in Old Ornish, causing the block to recede, opening the way to a poisoned hall. They overcame this obstacle using their environmental gear and made their way into the inner complex of the pyramid.

Chaos Beasts

The Party investigated a large entry hall with decorative columns, statues, and elaborate arcane inscriptions. When they attempted to use a psi-gauntlet to check for supernatural auras, the Party witnessed the statues come to life and attack. The touch of these creatures was dire: causing flesh and bone to morph into a shapeless, amorphous mass. Those suffering this affliction were driven to lose part of their sanity. Among these, Math, whose unwilling metamorphosis triggered a transformation of a different kind, as he experienced his first lycanthropic shift into a were-lion.
Beyond this chamber the Party discovered that the rest of the pyramid complex could only be accessed by way of a massive, over 300-foot-tall, vertical shaft, with one upper ledge (300’ from the bottom of the shaft) and two lower ledges (150’ and 60’ from the bottom). The ledge the Party was starting from was 200 feet from the bottom.
After conferring about some mysterious graffiti in this room, the Party came to learn that the Black Pyramid was once known as the “Voidseal."

Hellwasps and Evil Twins

The Party descended one ledge down into the complex. After fighting through three clouds of hellwasps, the Party activated another barrier block to reveal a set of prison cells. Here they discovered Lady Orphea and her crew (including Fulbeard’s son, Albeard). Orphea was diffident towards Thorpe and took a member of the Party aside to warn them that “another Thorpe” was locked up in one of the cells.
Jayne lured the Thorpe they had been traveling with into a cell and trapped him there to confront him. The doppelganger revealed himself to be Orphea’s twin brother, Oliver Chastain. During some drama, Oliver explained how the Void Empyreans had abandoned him on the sargasso and chosen Edmund’s brother Anthony as their champion instead. Anthony and the rest of Oliver’s crew had left Oliver stranded at sea, where he remained, until the Party showed up, which allowed Oliver the chance to sneak onto the MSS Arcadia. When the ship wrecked in a storm, he secretly went ashore and proceeded to shadow his sister’s movements.
When she was captured by the Princes of Tabazan, he resolved to rescue her, but was taken captive in the process. He remains a wildcard, but appears to have no love for the Vril or their Empyrean Void-Gods. He explained that the Voidseal pyramid was created by one of the Visitors as a prison for Void beings. Apparently, the Voidseal was used to confine such Empyrean creatures. He wants to help the Party, but they do not know if he can be trusted.
The Party also explored a statue in this room. The statue depicted a male figure carrying the Deathbringer Orb and a staff resembling one of Tobias’s maces. The statue was labeled: “Bishop Ahriman: Lifebringer.” The sculpted orb was lifesize and removable, so the Party removed it.

Void Dragon

The Party took a glance at the bottom ledge and inspected a statue of a bird resembling one seen outside the pyramid, but they did not advance beyond it. They instead ascended to the top, almost into the cloud of lightning crackling in the upper regions of the shaft, and placed the statue orb into a recess on the black barrier barring their way there. This caused a dragon, clad in scales shimmering with the purples and blues of midnight and crackling with electricity, to descend from the clouds above and attack.
