Abner Dupree’s Prayer Book

Abner Dupree’s Prayer Book is a manuscript codex containing Abner Dupree's collections of Pachucese prayers and journal entries describing his experiences among the people and places of the Pachuco and Outramar Jungles.

“Sunkeeper’s Invocation of Light and Darkness"

The Creator lit the Sun’s fire and set it in the sky to light the world.
On fiery wings the Sun traces the solar circle and then descends to its earthly domain to rest. <Mindfire visions? Have they seen this place?>
Light creates shadow and as the Sun descends the Dark Sun rises to take its place.
Through the ring of Fire darkness emerges. <What is on the other side of the ring?>
And if the place of the Sun is revealed, the Dark Sun will take His place and rule the middle world. <This is the purpose of our prayer: to keep the sun burning and delay the end of the world.>
We will light the fire.
We will keep it lit.
We will defend the holy place.
We will keep it hidden.
We will defy the Darkness.
We will keep the secrets of the Sun.
Abner Dupree's Prayer Book

After this prayer, Abner includes a brief commentary.

I've given up all hopes of ever returning to Noirlan. Most of the colonists have moved on. The ones that stay don't need leadership. They need to realize their freedom. This is the kind of freedom that folks back home only talk about. The Zoners live it. They come and go as they please. There's no soldiers or police compelling this or that. A man can walk into the jungle and simply live. This is the kind of life I never knew I wanted…   More and more I feel the desire to make a pilgrimage to the Land of the Two Suns Tribe. There's nothing left for me here, and I want to see the solar temple before I die. I don't miss Merika, but I do miss my family and I fain would see my dear sister’s kind face one more time. My brightest blessings go to them...   Now that I've found a complete codex of prayers I'll no longer be needing this copy. I leave it here in the hopes someone else can find the same delight and comfort that these sacred words have given me…
