Toxic Flare

Medical Journal, Research complied by Head Doctor Winslow Silentbrooke and Active Doctor Chi Maniz (Main Scribe)

Current Research: Ongoing

Threat Level:

Current Status: 13 dead, 45 known infected, 68 suspected and increasing

Discovered: Upon 3rd death

Speed: (Fast) 6 weeks since discovery

Outside Spread: 1 City and 4 towns with possible signs of infection

Cure Progression: Research is ongoing

Locked down all outgoing trade to mitigate possible vectors. Contacted the main Republic Government and a few of the Head Doctor's network. We should count the stars thrice over that the Head Doctor has a Curare with him or we might have been done for at the start.   The Head Doctor's Current Hypothesis: The [Airborne] disease originates from the Black Alder Wetlands. Common Thread for Victims: Those afflicted were in the vicinity of the Wetlands when the light flared three weeks back.

Reports of others falling ill outside of Gonoyofu. Water isn't a contaminate due to the lack of response from the Aloe Fish. And from what we've seen from the first few victims, this disease is definitely something the fish would notice.

We're going through harvested plants and herbs from the Alder Wetlands and nothing with magical properties seems to be showing any bacteria.

Transmission & Vectors

  • Possibly originates from the Black Alder Wetlands.
  • It's most likely to be an Airborne contaminate. Has a long survival rate in natural vegetation with no magical properties found in the Alder Wetlands, and doesn't survive magical processing.
  • Native Kawans have a strong resistance or immunity.

Symptoms

There are no visible symptoms before The Collapse, but we do have reports of people hallucinating before it occurs.

  • The Collapse
Patients abruptly collapse. Some pass out on impact other seem to maintain consciousness. Those with magic properties or constant exposure (daily enchanted meals and snacks) are the most likely to maintain consciousness. About an hour after collapse they quickly develop peak stages of influenza and rapid drops in temperature.
  • The Cracks
Within three days the veins on the inflicted skin starts to dry out with unnatural cracking. At times reaches past the layer of skin and will begin to bleed out, we have only been able minimize the depth of the cracks.
  • The Glow
Two days after they begin to glow faintly and by the third, the glow is a fluorescent blue. The longer the glow is sustained, brighter it becomes. Diminishes with the introduction of anything magical entering the body (doesn't disappear). A number of patients are still within this stage of the disease, currently sit in in this period for five days.
  • The Green Flame
Once the glow reaches it apex, it begins to transfer into the bloodstream. The veins visibly glow with the same bright hue. The slowest we've currently seen this process take place is within twenty hours and once the veins within the body are glowing, the color begins to change from blue to green. Rapid increase in temperature.   Within two hours we've wittiness green flames erupt from the cracks and when burned out the patient dies.

Treatment

Working Theory: The Toxic Flare has an adherence for magical energy or is negatively affect by it.   We have Priests amplifying healing circles regularly in the Wards. Healing magic also alleviates the condition - no signs of full recovery. Magic in general helps reduce pain and slow the condition. Currently using enchanted herbal mixtures to slow its progression.   Processing a large amount of enchanted meals for patients and residents. Beginning to place patients in make-shift medicinally enchanted pools which seem to help to treat the loss of nutrition and hydration.

Prognosis

Fatal in last stage. Unknown chance at recovery in the earlier stages.

Affected Groups

Many of the victims are non-Native Kawan, some even first generation born. The Native Kawan Citizens have yet to display any symptoms. But that may be the help from our Guardians, help that the non-Natives don't have.

Epidemiology

It doesn't seem to move between people directly, so we can assume that direct inhalation or consumption of contaminated food / beverage is possible.
