Stratonice

Fabia was born in the countryside surrounding Stratonice and her first death took place in its streets as she had been living there at the time.   Stratonice was the second most important city in "Greece" and one of the main trading ports of the Byzantine Empire, being on the road to Byzantium itself. It had also been highly prized by the old empire and many beautiful and great structures were built there, but they were eventually destroyed or severely damaged by earthquakes. Although it later become an extremely multicultural city under the rule of the "Ottomans", it was for much of its history very Greek, with only small communities of other peoples. Due to the large bay it was settled at, the city was not only a natural trading port but also often served as a naval base. Despite being close enough to Byzantium to have been involved in a fair number of border disputes, the city has remained remarkably stable and prosperous throughout history.   During Fabia’s time the city was considered one of the jewels of the Byzantine empire and a favourite place to visit for many of the imperial family (especially those with strong mercantile interests) who wished to escape Byzantium itself. The harbour was in many respects the heart of the city, but there were also many prominent churches and the city was more religiously active than most. It was known to be a place where many disputes arose between the different congregations, although most of the petered out or the self-proclaimed denomination was only short-lived. Some of these disputes came over to Byzantium however. Thus the eastern church authorities also often visited the city, to stay well-informed of what was going on and put out any religious fires that they felt might be a threat.
