Brinestone Penal Colony

Brinestone Penal Colony, informally known as the Brinestone or Saltrock, is a salt mine and a prison located in the Sea of Tillgar. It is operated by the Kingdom of Karessia, although a treaty exists with the Kingdom of Tessuris for them to ship their most dangerous criminals there as well.
The prison is mostly self-sufficient, with prisoners policing themselves, maintaining items and tools and the like, mining the salt on the island itself, and farming and cultivation of saltrice that grows on the island. Major food supplies other than saltrice are delivered via ship from Grostinheart, as are most prisoner transports, and guard supplies.

Gangs

Several gangs operate in the prison, each with their own allies and rivals, although this is (fortunately) mostly contained to the prison itself.
  • Sabre Cats: Thieves and assassins for hire, many of their members have ties to marauder and bandit gangs on the mainland. They value their martial skills and many of them are capable fighters. Their name originates from a group of Tabaxi armed with sabres and scimitars that had fled the jungles of Dumrayan and attempted to restart their crimes in the Kingdom of Tessuris. Nowadays, the gang consists of anyone willing to become a part of the gang. Their leader is a Tabaxi named Blazing Fire. The Sabre Cats are among the largest of the gangs and the unofficial rulers of the prison.
  • Black Hands: Dwarven supremacists, oftentimes sentenced because of violence against non-dwarves. Allegedly, some of them have ties to the duergar armies that were raging across the Eastern Realms during theWar of Phragos  . They are oftentimes involved in violent altercations against non-dwarves. Their leader is an old mountain dwarf named Aristeo Silverbeard, a veteran of the Band of the Unbroken Boulder. The Black Hands are generally hated by all other groups within the prison.
  • The Witches: a band of hags, alchemists and other cooky figures, nearly all of them related to the production and spread of narcotics throughout the Eastern Realms. Their leader is Marjorie Bitterlegs, believed to be an aspiring hag.

Recent events

Rumours circle around the prison island that several are attempting a break-out. The guards are at a loss of what to do, but are not too worried for the prisoners reaching the mainland. The warden of the prison has a sending stone to the ports on the mainland ready to stop any and all shipments to the prison in case a riot erupts. Nevertheless, he is keen to find out who exactly is planning the prison break, as he would not like to have the prison's reputation tarnished under his command.
