Empire of Illyria
The Empire of Illyria was founded over 300 years ago and has been ruled by a single family since that time. The current emperor, Ellwyn II, has ruled for the last 22 years and currently rules from the imperial capital of Illyria.
While styled as an empire, the government controls a relatively modest amount of land between the Astral Sea in the west and the Wastelands to the east. The northern border consists of the Termat Range of mountains and beyond a scattering of smaller city states. To the south, the Kingdom of Selnge occupies the swampland between the two territories and the difficult terrain precludes many border issues.
Territories

Additionally, the Empire in the last 30 years has established a series of overseas colonies to the west in the Tre'am Archipelago .
Military
The military is under the direct control of the Emperor, with him as its head. The Grand General of the Arm and the Grand Admiral of the Navy both answer directly to the Emperor and answer his needs for action throughout the Empire and beyond. All citizens are required to serve at least two years in the military upon reaching 16 years of age to be granted full citizenship. Individuals can opt out of this service, but they will be subject to taxes as if they were foreigners as well as being unable to receive the social benefits that are offered by empire.
During the reign of Ellwyn II, there have been two major undertakings by the military. In 311E, the army was called up in full force to drive back an invasion of the undead from the wastelands that had appeared in the heartland, south of the Lake of Clouds. The battles against these monstrosities lasted over four years and eventually ended with the defeat of the invaders. A punitive expedition was sent into the Wastelands in an attempt to find the source of the undead, but none of the members of that mission were ever seen again. Not wishing to risk more losses, the army reinforced the fortified outpost at Fort Marin to keep watch should these creatures return.
The second major mission for the military for the past thirty years has been the establishment of a new colony across the Astral Sea in the Tre'am Archipelago. The Navy had scouted several possible locations to establish a colony that could provide tropical products to the empire as well as acting as a trade outpost for some of the other cultures located in the area. The Army maintains a small garrison there to protect against the native animals and pirates that sometimes prowl the surrounding waters. The empire is currently in the process of building additional vessels to support this endeavor, protecting the new colony as well as the shipping back and forth between it and the empire.
