Alteryon

Alteryon

Alteryon is the last surviving dragon from the time before the First Age. He resides deep within Pandesh, and has enjoyed long life through living long periods of time, centuries, in dormancy. His longest period of inactivity stretches some 2500 years from to 6143 F.A. through to 1255 S.A., shortly after which the Dragonborn found their way to the mountain and founded Okarthel.   His lair under the mountain is formed of untouched caves and wildly-developed soaring stone structures and bridges through many years of crafting the mists summoned in his caves.   In 231 T.A., Alteryon took in the child, Torinn, following his finding by Dragonborn scouts under auspicious circumstances. Sensing a dormant magic, Alteryon taught Torinn magical means and homeschooled him through an extensive book collection collected by Dragonborn over millennia. Feeling shifts in the leylines of the world, Alteryon sent Torinn out shortly after his 50th birthday, asking Janrhen Senlin to accompany him.

Physical Description

Body Features

Dragon form: The luster of a mature silver dragon accentuates its prominent neck frills, a beaklike snout, plated facial armor, and long, backswept horns. From a distance, the exceptionally fine scales appear to blend together, lending the dragon the appearance of a sculpture. Silver dragons have a scent reminiscent of rain and evergreen needles. Their powerful build places them among the strongest members of dragonkind.   Human form: Tall, straight-backed, thin. Pale white skin.

Facial Features

Sharp eyebrows which turn down in the middle give him a severe expression, despite his light-hearted personality.

Identifying Characteristics

Silver hair falls long and straight down the sides of his thin face and down his back, held back from the forehead by a large clip on the crown of his head which gives him an erudite look.

Apparel & Accessories

Human Form: Long black robes with wide sleeves hang low, inlaid with swirling patterns of silver thread which create intricate patterns of swirling clouds and waves which chase across the light, opaque fabric.

Personal history

Torinn is warned by the dragon that he will encounter innocents caught up in the webs of fate and that his friends will be those most in need, even if they cannot or do not speak freely of it. It is time for Torinn to leave. Evil is stirring in the world and for good or for ill, Torinn must make his own way now. He should not speak of Alteryon’s presence in the world. Alteryon’s time has passed, the age of the dragons is coming to its long and drawn out close. As the last of his race, Alteryon will watch the final sunset, and bow gracefully from the world. He has no hope of meeting a mate. He will tie up his affairs, and then set sail through the air over the endless ocean, and discover the beyond where he can experience his final days. Alteryon hands Torinn a small glass vial with a thimbleful of clear lavender liquid (a perfume of bewitching), and says if you find yourself without friends, and no one to help your cause, use this and speak wel. Now go, your guide awaits Alteryon says, locking eyes with something over Torinn’s shoulder and nodding. As Torinn turns to look, Alteryon pushes Torinn in the back and off the mountain. You plummet down into the night, the rock face flying closer and closer, until a huge updraft lifts, screaming through his ears, into his throat, forcing your scream back down your neck. Your eyes stream in the rushing cold as you see the ground lifting away from you, and you glide on the dragon’s updraft off into the night sky.   Alteryon counselled Senlin to seek out Ilaria Hopeswater at the House of the Glowing Veil in the lost lands beyond the Mountains of Razdún, west of Icarna. Alteryon did not presume that Senlin should protect or lay his life down for Torinn, but if he would take Torinn with him as he embarks on his way, until he reaches his destination, Alteryon would be ever grateful. Senlin should wait at the Western exit of the valley at midnight on the Day of Starsong. Alteryon wishes Senlin luck in his journey and grants him a Moontouched Cloak, and hopes this gift helps him in his quest.

Morality & Philosophy

Alteryon hates injustice and cruelty and will attempt to right an injustice if he sees one, but has no inclination to intentionally seek evil and destroy it. He does not usually go out of his way to bring justice to the world, but will cheerfully assist good creatures in genuine need. He waits until their assistance is requested or until inaction would allow something evil to come to pass. He concerns himself less with punishing or rooting out evildoers than with protecting the innocent and healing their hurts. He is more interested in protecting the individuals he has come to care for. Like most silver dragons, Alteryon does not enjoy combat, and is averse to killing.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Though lawful and good, silver dragons have no great love for hierarchies and formal authority. Alteryon believes that living a moral life involves doing good deeds and taking no actions that bring undeserved harm to other beings. He does not take it upon himself to root out evil. Silver dragons find that, in time, evil tends to make itself felt almost everywhere, and they seek to stamp it out whenever it appears in their vicinity. Should they discover widespread evil looming over the land, they are both willing and able to locate its source and tackle it there.   Silver dragons are the knights-errant of dragonkind – fierce champions of great causes. Good silvers defend innocents, assure the prosperity of civilized kingdoms, and protect and nurture noble families and young heroes. Honour means more than life. Silvers choose silence over lies and keep their word, even when doing so places them in opposition against creatures of their alignment. For example, a good-aligned silver dragon sworn to guard an oracle from all intruders discourages any adventurers from consulting the oracle, regardless of their reason, and attempts to destroy those who disregard the warning – after offering them the option to retreat.

Likes & Dislikes

Alteryon is rarely severe or short-tempered in nature, but a rather simple amusement means he enjoys displaying a stern facial structure which throws off people’s interpretations.
