Trased's Tome of Piety

Based on the system in Mythic Odesseys of Theros

Piety

Piety has nothing to do with faith or belief, except insofar as a person’s thoughts and ideals drive them to action in a greater being’s or an ideal's service. A character's piety score reflects the actions they have taken in their greater being’s service.   A character typically can have a piety score no greater than their highest mental stat (intelligence, wisdom, charisma), which is referenced as your piety modifier and piety score plus their proficiency bonus. Notable exceptions are clerics, paladins, and warlocks. Those of the listed classes devoted to a greater being automatically increase their maximum piety by an amount equal to the level(s) they have in the listed classes. For example, a 4th-level cleric with a wisdom score of 16 has a starting piety score of 4 and a maximum of 20. An aasimar character has their maximum piety score increased by 5, no matter which greater being they give piety to.   When a player is making their character, the character's base piety equals their proficiency bonus.   Other relevant knowledge:
  • A character can only benefit from one greater being's domains at a time (for example, if a 10-piety follower of a god that has two domains can choose either domain but not both to gain benefits from)
  • A character gains benefits when their piety score crosses certain thresholds: 5, 10, 20, and 30. If a character's piety score exceeds and then drops below one of those thresholds, they lose the benefit they gained at the higher tier
  • A character's spellcasting for any spells is your piety modifier
  • If a spell gained is a ritual, a character can cast it as a ritual as normal but still requires material components if any are needed
  • When a character switches their piety from one greater being to another, they start with the lowest piety possible for their class

Gaining/Losing Piety

A character's piety score increases by 1 when they do something to advance the greater being’s interests or behave in accordance with the greater being’s ideals. The greater beings expect great deeds from their champions, so your piety score typically increases only when you accomplish an important goal (such as the completion of a quest), make a significant sacrifice of your own self-interest, or otherwise when the DM sees fit. The DM decides the amount of any increase or decrease, but a single deed typically changes your piety score by only 1 point in either direction unless your action is very significant. The DM is encouraged to let the players know when they gain or lose piety but is not required to. A character's piety should be expected to increase by 1 every two to three sessions of play if the character is properly devout and their actions are in accordance with the ideals of their greater being.   Typical ways to increase piety:
  • Gain a substantial amount of followers in the greater being's service
  • Constructing or restoring a shrine or church to the greater being
  • Enforce a main tenant or ideal of the greater being
  • Defeating or thwarting the schemes of enemies of the greater being
Typical ways to lose piety:
  • Act directly contrary to the greater being's tenants and ideals
  • Harm another follower of the greater being
  • Ruin a sacred place or place of worship to the greater being
  • Forsaking duties imposed by the greater being for personal gain
Any spells below can be cast through spell slots of a sufficient level if you have them.
