Banshee

It was against the rules for Isabell to leave the hamlet at nightfall. She couldn't help herself. During that day in the field, she lost the amulet given to her. It was a momento of her lover that was off to war. How could she leave it there?   Isabell walked the field trying to retrace her steps. The light of the moons helped some but she realized it was like looking for a needle in a haystack. Then she saw it. The shining of the moons bounced off its silver surface just at the edge of the forest. Isabell ran and grabbed it, holding it to her heart in relief.   As she turned to return home, she heard a cry come from the forest followed by weeping. Isabell froze in terror. She had been warned not to venture into the woods. She heard the sobbing of a woman again. Sense left her, she wanted to help that woman. She could be in danger. Isabell sprinted into the forest after the unknown woman.   Branches whipped at Isabell as she followed the sounds of the wailing woman. She wanted to be in and out of the woods as fast as possible. In her hurry she tripped, dropping the amulet. It bounced several times before falling out of view. Isabell scrambled after it. She crested the hill.   Down the small hill, Isabell found the woman. She was sitting on the ground in a perfectly white dress. The woman was clearly an elf with her pointed ears and with glowing white skin. What Isabell was taken aback by was that she could see the woman's corpse through her. The amulet was directly behind the woman's spirit. Isabell was shaking with fear.   Taking a deep breath she picked herself up and crept toward the amulet. Isabell had heard stories of ghosts. Some were kind, but others were violent. She didn't want to take the chance with this one. She looked to the ground, trying to avoid stepping on twigs and dried leaves. Step by step Isabell moved closer to the woman and the amulet.   Reaching for the amulet, the pressure under Isabell's front foot snapped a buried stick. She fell forward, gripping the amulet as her fall caused more of a commotion. Isabell looked up to the ghostly woman who spun to face her. The peaceful look on her face twisted and grew dark. The woman let out an ear-piercing wail. Isabell felt immense pressure in her head. Her vision started to fade and she fell into unconsciousness. Isabell would be the second corpse in that small forest valley.
