Suncall

Scientia ipsa potentia est.

The city of Suncall is a sprawling mass of shining white rectangular limestone buildings in all different sizes, all contained within a 60 foot tall wall of the same material. It is entered through a large gate made of gold and stone. Walking along the cobblestone streets you will most likely see thousands of people milling about, all looking very busy and determined to reach their destination.

Suncall is famous for its academic and research accomplishments. They boast the highest percentage of citizens with some form of higher education, and front all manner of scientiffic, medical and most of all magical fields. If you are a young person with budding arcane talents, Suncall's Solaris Academy, or "the Solaris" as its often called, is the best place to make sure those talents are grown and harnessed. Thousands of students between the ages of (in human years) 10-20 study there and call its spiraling white towers home. Students of the Solaris Academy have gone on to make major breaktroughs in the arcane, inventing items and spells that people today probably couldn't make do without. Children in Suncall spend their days from the age of three learning in facilities called Docaea, where they're taught skills and knowledge about the real world. Many students pick up magical abilities here, and they are then sent on to study at the Solaris or another magical school.

Suncall is mostly populated by elves, humans and dragonborn. The citizens of Suncall wear light colored, flowing clothes, made of plant based materials such as cotton and linen. City officials wear similar light robes with a deep green sash and a golden emblem of a sun somewhere on their person. This can be sewn into the fabric of the clothes or sash, inlaid into a staff, or made into jewelry and worn as a necklace or ring.

Patron Gods: Lun'arei: God of the Moon and Mistra: Goddess of the Arcane.

Demographics

Circa 3,5 million elves, 3,5 million humans, 3 million dragonborn (Suncall has the largest population of dragonborn of any city), 1 million half elf/half humans, and 1 million people of other races live in Suncall. Around 50% are upper middle class to upper class, with a large group of upper eschalon academics and magicians calling Suncall their home. The remaining 50% are mostly middle class, with only a small amount of families that are truly poor.

Government

Suncall is run by a congress consisting of 30 individuals. 24 of these represent the racial demographics of the city: The congress consists of 7 elves, 7 humans, 6 dragonborn, 2 half elves, as well as one aaracokra and a dwarf. The first 22 are directly correspondent to the amount (in millions, and multiplied by two) of citizens of their race, while the last two represent the citizens of other races in the city, and can be of any race other than elf, human or dragonborn. These congresspeople are voted for every ten years, or when a member of the congress dies or is otherwise unable to longer be a part of the governing of the city. The members of the congress then in turn vote for the heads of the six branches of Suncall: Academia, Arcana, Defense, Economy, Natura, and Justice. These Branchleaders are also part of the congress, making for a total of 30 congressmembers.

Suncalls citizens pay 30% of their income to the government and as such have free education and healthcare. This means that citizens of Suncall attend the Docaea, the Solaris Academy and other educational institutions for free.

Defences

Suncall has a medium-sized military, with roughly 40,000 soldiers. These soldiers are trained in combat on water, land and in the air.

History

Suncall is an ancient city. The oldest records that can be found of civilization in this region date back to 600 years Pre-Collapse. Back then it was nothing more than a humble, mostly elven shepherds' village, until the Solaris Academy was founded by a group of four spellcasters known as the Solaris Four in the year 100 P.C. Very little is known about this group, but the Solaris Academy and Suncall quickly earned a reputation for having a population with very innate magic prowess, and the institute to help them harness and cultivate that talent. Most people you meet there will know at least a little magic. No one knows why this is, but there are many theories. Many religious groups claim that Suncall was blessed by their deity. Others think it is constructed on magical ground, or near an arcane power source, though many expeditions have been led to find this alleged source with no result. Others believe that the Rosalia River that flows from the Chatshire Peak is magical in nature, and that the water that was consumed from there by the Suncall citizens for centuries imbued them with magical talents.

Suncall continued to grow as more people moved from the neighboring regions to study at the Solaris and to live in the beautiful city. Over time, Suncall noticed an influx of dragonborn citizens that had moved there from the mountains.

Architecture

The buildings are mostly minimalistic in design, with a few metal accents here and there. These accents can be things such as windowframes, repairs of holes or cracks, or maybe Suncall's golden emblem inlaid into the wall.

Geography

Suncall's climate is arid and hot. It is nestled in the valley of a stout mountain range called the Grentara Rise.

Natural Resources

Suncall does not have access to any natural resources other than fish. It mostly stays afloat because of the high demand for magical and nonmagical research. Its citizens make their livings doing different kinds of trades such as tailoring, tinkering and bookbinding.
