Session 23: The Assassination Plot
General Summary
The session started with the Water Merchants escorting King Tyroth Attar's carriage into Hyrule Castletown, and upon entering the city, they heard a scream up ahead. A couple of shadowy figures emerged from the crowd and shot and killed the carriage horse and driver, sending the gathered crowd into a panic. Sunny tried to climb up onto the carriage, but grabs a weak piece of the carriage, which broke off in his hand as he was climbing on top of the carriage, causing him to be a bit off balance when he got to the top.
Al, quickly took off his backpack, gave a pep talk to his construct buddy, Bert, and magically donned some armor that looked to be made from ancient technology. Thistle turned into a bear, Easifa turned invisible. The Water Merchants then started countering the shooters attacks and performing counter-attacks. They then noticed some other shadowy figures making their way through the fleeing crowds on all sides towards the carriage, where they began attacking the Gerudo guards. The Water Merchants did their best to repel the assassins.
Sunny then noticed wisps of smoke coming from the crowd towards the carriage in 4 different directions. Sunny managed to kill one, who dropped the bomb he was carrying, which rolled next to the cart. Al, quickly picked it up and tossed it out the front gate. Sunny then shot and killed another bomb-carrying assassin, who also dropped the bomb, that rolled under the carriage's back wheel. Easifa zapped a third bomb-carrier dead, and bear Thistle smothered the fuse of that bomb with his slobbery bear tongue.
The bomb under the carriage wheel then exploded, rocking the carriage and disabling it, and almost knocking Sunny off its top. A fourth bomb-toting assassin made his way to the cart and tossed a bomb into the window. Al used his Sheikah vanish ability to quickly teleport inside carriage, with the intent of throwing the bomb out. King Tyroth, not recognizing Al in his armor, mistook Al for an assassin and tried to tackle him. Al slipped out of his grip and tried to throw the bomb out the window to Sunny. However, the bomb exploded in midair. Al covered King Tyroth to protect him. Sunny, Al, took the blast, but survived. Easifa and bear Thistle then took out the remaining assassins.
As the crowd dispersed, Captain Krin and Sgt. Ian Collins came running into the area. General Nubia entered the carriage to check on King Tyroth. The guards and the Water Merchants started checking under the masks of the assassins. All of the assassins were discovered to be ordinary citizens of Castletown. General Nubia then exits the cart and confronted Captain Krin, accusing the Kingdom of Hyrule of negligence and an act of war. The Water Merchants made a case as to why this was not an act of war. Nubia angrily demanded a horse to get the carriage and king out of the vicinity. Thistle wild-shaped into a horse to draw the carriage, but as he did, an distant explosion was felt, and the group saw off in the distance, the steeple of the Temple of Time rock slightly, and a cloud of dust and debris billow up from the Temple's front. Capt. Krin ordered his soldier to follow him to the Temple of Time.
The Water Merchants inquired to where King Tyroth was heading. Nubia let them know his destination was the royal castle. The Water Merchants thought it would be too dangerous and best to not go there at the moment Driving the crippled cart with the damaged wheel, the Water Merchants led the gerudos to Trouble-A-Brewin'. The Water Merchants suggested King Tyroth hide there, in the cellar, while Sunny, Tanager, and Easifa stand guard while Thistle, Feng, and Al take the carriage to the Hyrules castle as misdirection. General Nubia needed much convincing of this plan, but eventually went along with it.
Thistle, Feng, and Al took King Tyroth's carriage (along with his surviving guards) to the Hyrule Palace and parked it there, and instructed the guards to stay with the carriage and act like King Tyroth was in the castle. The three Water Merchants then headed back to the Tilt n' Stagger Inn to get their own cart. They "borrowed" a horse and some blankets, and brought them all back to Trouble-A-Brewin', with he plan of hiding General Nubia and King Tyroth under blankets in the back of the cart and take them to Hyrule castle, which General Nubia and King Tyroth reluctantly agreed to.
The Water Merchants disguised Al using Tanager's "Carriage Driver Ted" costume and some stage makeup, and they both drove the cart, with the rest of the group a short distance ahead and behind the cart. Without any trouble, they made it to Hyrule Castle's outer wall where they were interrogated by the Sheikah guards on why they needed entry. The guards were reluctant to allow entry until King Tyroth emerged from under the blankets and demanded entry, which the Sheikah guards acquiesced. At the castle doors, the guards there allowed entry to King Tyroth without much resistance. The party was denied entry. The guards also seemed to recognize Feng and asked how he's been since "the fall," which Feng gave a cryptic answer to.
The Water Merchants then made their way to the Temple of Time. There, they saw many guards and civilians tending to dead and wounded people. There was signficant damage to the front of the temple, with the doors blown completely off. The group met up with Captain Krin, who was leading the recovery efforts. He indicated he believed that gerudo were involved with the attack on the Temple of Time, and that they used the assassination attempt to distract the Royal Guard of Hyrule's focus from the Temple.
Captain Krin told the group he was told that a group of creatures just appeared at the steps of the Temple and attacked before anyone knew what was happening. He then lead the group into the back room of the Temple--an area normally prohibited to common folk--where there was a sword in a pedestal. As they walked down the hall, they saw the pedestal and the sword on the ground in pieces. Al was able to analyze the sword (that looked like the Master Sword) but determined it was a replica.
Captain Krin then showed the group that where the pedestal used to be, there was a hole in the floor with hidden steps leading down. He leads the Water Merchants down into a well-masoned underground area. At an atrium, there was a door that was ripped of its hinges, with the doorway adorned by wards. Inside, they found empty mounting hooks, with a shape of a missing trident left in the dust. The triden appeared to be missing its points. Al recalled a trident that was rumored to be carried by Ganon in legends.
Captain Krin showed them a second door that was locked. Sunny used his mystery key and unlocked the door. As they opened the door, a golden glow emitted out. Inside was another well-masoned room. Along the back wall were glowing runes written in ancient Hylian, which Al was able to read, but as he did, a voice spoke the words that echoed in all the groups heads, saying:
"In the shadowed depths of Hyrule's history, an echo of dread returns. Malevolent forces awaken and seek out the shattered pieces of the Demon Trident, each fragment a key to resurrecting Ganon, the scourge of light and life. The sacred threads of fate waver on the brink of despair.
Yet all is not lost. In this dire hour, champions will emerge. They must seek the Divine Prisms, relics imbued with the goddesses’ holy light. Only with these divine artifacts can they seal the abyss and quell the resurgence of evil.
Their journey shall be fraught with peril, but united by courage, wisdom, and strength, they are the last bastion against the encroaching darkness. Let the light of Hyrule guide them, for their quest will shape the destiny of all."
As he finished reading, the glowing light appeared to almost "come together" forming a golden glowing chunk of material. As Al went to touch it, the item began to speak. It revealed that it is the essence of the Triforce of Wisdom. The group asked about the Divine Prisms. The fragment of the Triforce indicated they are hidden, and also that if it was completed, can impart more knowledge.
As the group discussed how to find the rest of the Triforce fragments and the Divine Prisms, Al inquired to the group if they had heard about a missing or stolen royal crown and scepter. While the group was unfamiliar with them, the Triforce of Wisdom indicated that the royal crown and scepter were used in rituals in the royal cemetery at King's Tomb. The group decided to head there to look for answers...
