The Spiritual Stone of the Forest was protected by the Great Deku Tree. In order to obtain it, Link had to destroy the parasite that had infested him. After Link defeated Gohma, the Great Deku Tree told him that the creature's curse had already sealed his fate and dies shortly after giving Link the stone.
