Phase Grasshopper

Every third year, swarms of these voracious consumers of Tower Bamboo, which grows in towering stands at the edge of the lowland jungles of Brunivard, will emerge from hiding and eat as much bamboo as they can. They are a favorite treat for several bird species, but hard to catch, given their ability to move through the ethereal plane to avoid attacks.

After eating their fill (and severely cutting back the Tower Bamboo), the phase grasshoppers shift inside the hollow sections of the bamboo to lay their eggs and die. The eggs develop slowly over the next three years, using nutrients from the bodies of the parent grasshoppers and from the bamboo itself. When the grasshoppers hatch, they phase out of their protective chambers in the bamboo and start eating to begin the cycle again.
