Fallout Vindictus Mission: The Black Shadow Of The Dogwood

They say the lands are plagued by a stalking shadow, grim and black and huge. They will tell you of the men who try too slay him, but they will also tell you of the screams that echoed throughout the forest long after— Local Farmer
"The Black Shadow of the Dogwood" aka "The Beast of Darkwood", is a title given to a supposed massive, killer werewolf that stalks the forests outside of Dogtown. Accounts of The Black Shadow form part of the folklore of the surrounding communities and descriptions of the creature's appearance vary considerably; though it often stands recorded as an omen of death no matter what account you go by.   Long thought to be dead, this beast has once again made an appearance in such an abrupt way, terrorizing the local village communities once again by slaughtering their brahmin and a few local residences. The Towns people have asked you to put a end to this Shadows Tyranny so they may once again know peace.

BEHAVIOR

The Beast is at best described as being ultra-aggressive, willing to attack and kill anything that approaches them, especially if encountered in locations the creature considers its turf. In its consistent territory, it’s shown to be willing to challenge any creature regardless of status or size difference, and will usually tie with if not overpower such creatures in turf wars. Aggressive, hard-hitting, relentless, and hardy, The Beast is a fight not for the faint of heart for those who do, deal with a fast, aggressive and tough creature; attacking with swift, far-reaching claw combos and brute strength.

DARKWOOD BEAST QUEST 1: DOWN ON ALL FOURS

Quest Giver:

Greetings stranger! My name is Tama. I watch over the local community in these parts of the woods. Lately, our wolves have been acting strange. They may have a temper, but normally they do not act aggressively towards humans like most city folk claim, but these days they have been going after hikers, hunters and pretty much anyone passing by, supposedly without provocation! I have an obligation to protect my wolves but in cases like this I need to prioritize my fellow humans. Will you help me find out what’s been going on??

Quest Description:

Seems like this community has been having trouble with their local wildlife. The towns leader has requested that you look into why the local predators have become so aggressive as of lately

DARKWOOD BEAST QUEST 2: LET SLIP THE DOG OF WAR

Quest Giver:

Oh Dear I knew it! Do you hear that? There’s no mistaking it, He has acknowledged your presence. The Darkwood Beast. We all thought him dead years ago, but now it seems that was untrue. I’m thinking that perhaps because of the increasing number of threats in the area such as those bizarre creatures coming up from the east is causing him to become more aggressive than usual. He always did have a gruesome temper when it came to protecting what he believes is his, but this could explain why he is attacking passerby’s even more often then what he use too. Even though I now sympathize with him I cannot allow this to drag on any longer. We need to lure him out by taking down a few members in his pack. We cannot let this chance pass us by.

Quest Description:

The Local rumors are true, the Black Beast still thrives within the local woods! Tama has requested your assistance in culling this menace once and for all but also requests that you do not let him suffer too much.

DARKWOOD WEREWOLF ATTACK PATTERNS

  • Charge
In an attempt to ram the player, the creature will lower its head and dash abruptly forward, if the creature misses its target it will attempt to stop itself. In a tired state the creature will frantically attempt to stop itself only to trip or ram into a nearby wall, effectively dazing itself. It is highly recommended that you use these precious moments
  • Gnawin Grab
In an attempt to regain health, the creature will preform a sprint attack. Should this attack not be successfully dodged, the creature will grab the player and chomp down on them. This devastating attack allows the creature to replenish a bit of its health while doing some damage.
  • Roar
Roars when it first sees the player. It will also roar every time it enters rage mode. Outside rage mode, this roar does no damage
  • Cross Slash
The creature lashes at the player by crossing its claws as if they were a pair of scissors. Deals a large amount of damage and inflicts Bleeding.
  • Bite
Bites while sweeping its head to the side. Can be performed twice, with the creature sweeping its head in the opposite direction.
  • Lungin Bites
Briefly stands tall on its hindlegs, then brings itself to the ground while biting. Can be performed up to three times.
  • Claw Swipe
Performs several claw swipes while chasing a target, alternating between its left and right paws. Can be performed up to four times.
  • Death Howl
The creatures strongest non-physical attack. Starting off in its rage mode, the creature roars at an extremely high volume, creating powerful shockwaves with high oscillatory frequency which are capable of damaging and even destroying targets. Deals a large amount of damage and instantly stuns the player.
  • Pin
It will put its claws close together and look at its target. It then pounces a small distance forward, pinning the player. It will grab the victim with its mouth and begin to savagely shake and slam him/her into its surroundings like a mad dog. This pin is deadly because it deals huge amounts of fixed damage in an very short period of time. Given that this attack can deplete a full health bar in little more than two seconds, Hunters are advised to use a Dung Bomb before the pin starts.

DARKWOOD WEREWOLF DROPS

You have bested the terror of the Darkwood, and as a reward Tama has also graciously given you 1000 caps for your hard work with a little note that reads Use in Good Health. In addition, Tama has also allowed you to carve whatever you wish off the Beasts corpse, here is what you get.

  • Wild Pelt
Wild set of fur from a Black Canine. When forged, the jet-black fur helps the wearer blend in with the shadows Effects: Invisibility during the night.
  • Black Claw
A hard claw that’s taken a multitude of lives in a manner best left unsaid
  • Bloodstained Fang
Mostly obtained by carving. Rarely by breaking. Sharp and serrated, used in many weapons.
  • Wolf Tail
An exquisitely cushy and handsome tail that could make any merchant blush if it weren’t for the terrible bloodstains it hides.
  • Dog Bone
The large, sturdy bone of a beast. Prized by blacksmiths as a prime forging material.
  • Dog Eye
The shiny eye from the Darkwood Beast which is said to help those who wield it to be better at observing their foe from a distance. Who knows how many creatures “last moments” have been spent staring into them.
Trivia
  • Tama states that the reason the Darkwood Beast has hyped up his aggressions is because of ‘strange creatures coming up from the east’. While it is not specified as to what specific creatures she is mentioning are, given how you run into some horrid creatures on your way to the Darkwood Beast, its safe to say they may be the experimental “Malefactors” created by the ex-institute scientists.

  • While the beast itself is always stated to be aggressive, the presence of Malefactors is used to show the player how destructive these introduced mutants have become to not just Boston’s humans population, but to Boston and it's surrounding area's wildlife as well.
