Thywicket Bile

For many creatures on the plains, consuming corrupted plant matter is a great risk. If accumulated arcane energy sits in the gut too long, it can mutate the surrounding tissues. Through the effects of biomagnification, carnivores suffer a much higher risk of mutation. It is necessary, of course, for animals to eat, and cities built on the backs of beasts need to consume huge quantities of food, putting them and the citizens in constant danger. One city has a natural defense against this corruption. The caterpillar carrying the city of Thywicket consumes hundreds to thousands of tons of carnivorous grass per day, yet remains unaffected by arcane accumulation. Its gut produces a key solution for arcane accumulation.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Bile from the great caterpillar is a slightly viscous, green and orange liquid. There is an iridescent quality to the bile.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Strongly basic, as it comes from the gut of the caterpillar. It rapidly dissolves all manner of organic material, and can destroy many types of inorganic material. It halso has the unique effect of pulling magic out of materials it dissolves. For organic material Thywicket consumes, magic is stripped out and precipitates as a black, sooty powder. Objects that cannot be fully dissolved in the bile get coated in a coagulted form of the liquid. As it coagulates, the bile hardens into a pearly substance. Just like in mollusks, these pearls smooth out irritating objects, which Thywicket can then pass in its droppings.

History & Usage

Cultural Significance and Usage

While not used experimentally by the people of Thywicket, they place great spiritual significance in the pearls the bile forms. High-ranking members of the Church of First Ascension may be ordained to become official pearl divers. Thywicket pearls are seen as a symbol for the followers of the church: through the miracles of the caterpillar, the rough materials of the world can be turned into beautiful pearls. They believe that the pearls are an earthly proof that through the metamorphosis of Thwicket, its people will ascend to a higher, more pure state of being.
