Drakkenroost

A huge castle made of gleaming white marble. Gold fills every crack in the stone walls, as the castle is repaired in the kintsugi method. This keeps the building attractive to the draconic mounts which were stabled here. The gold veins tell the story of every siege and battle the structure has repelled- webs of gold showing where each war machine struck the wall but could not fell it.

Architecture

The structure of this castle is strange in many respects, especially material choice. Polished white marble webbed with rich black streaks form the walls. Cut into imposing slabs, the smooth blocks of marble form an almost unbroken surface rising up the first fifty feet. Atop this featureless wall, the true beauty of the castle begins. Vaulted arches form symmetrical pathways of columns across the structure, punctuated by turrets piercing the sky. Three domes cap the mighty castle, lined with statues of mythical beasts and heroes. The throne room sits in the largest dome at the center, overlooking the expanse of the castle. Perches and roosts are scattered across the whole of the structure, providing landing and takeoff points for the many dragons that settle in the castle.

History

This castle was once the seat of power for a nation famed for its dragon-riding knights in the Third Age. Drawn to the richness of the marble walls (and the vast stores of gold), dragons would settle on the castle. Over time the beasts could be cajoled and bribed into being trained as mounts. With the might of dragons, Drakkenroost had an unparalleled martial superiority over the region. The nation prospered greatly, yet eventually faded over time. But Drakkenroost still stands, somehow gleaming gold and white just as in its glory days. Over the ages, the castle withstood hundreds of assaults and sieges. Every enemy broke upon the mighty walls, never fully realizing the tactical blunder of disturbing the nesting space of a colony of dragons until the monsters took to the sky en masse.
