Regions of Hubworld: Introduction

It is assumed by sages that Hubworld is at the nexus of the elemental planes* because of the ways in which it is bounded. To the north, the frozen Vastlands fade into eternal blizzard and skin-tearing winds. To the east is the Ocean Endless, so named because no one has ever seen the other side of it. The world gets hotter the further south one goes and at its southern inhabitable limit, seas steam and one can make out ranges of volcanic mountains in the distance, but no one can approach or see what is beyond them. In the west, the sun disappears into the Forever Mountains, presumably past the edge of the world, but so far explorers have only been able to find mountains behind mountains and the sunset always further out of reach. Seasonal changes are caused by the sun’s shift from a NE-SW orbit to an E-W orbit and back throughout the year.   *[“The Elements” are conceived of quite differently by different schools, some sages naming four, some five, and some thirteen elements. The poles of the world are often associated with the set “Air, Water, Fire, Earth”, but because the traditional oppositions are not reflected (Air vs Earth, Water vs Fire), a growing body of sages argue that Hubworld lies at the nexus of Cold vs Heat and Solidity vs Fluidity. A six-element model has also been proposed with the traditional elemental disc bisecting the world disc at the equator and the north and south poles leading to the Negative Material and Positive Material planes, respectively. Proponents of this theory argue that a sea of fire lies beyond the Forever Mountains, which is where the sun sinks to refuel each night.]
