Northeast Region: The Golden Plains and East Rodites
The South Golden Crescent flares out at its western tip into a set of smaller ranges and valleys separating the Hubbish City-States and the Refuge of Vaslaline from the Golden Plains. The plains are bounded by these mountains to the south, the Golden Desert to the east, the western steppes to the north and the Black Sink to the west. The plains are home to a pastoral Zoron-speaking society. Villages are generally self-supporting, each with its own protectors, but some communities pay tribute to a warrior lord or wizard for protection. The population is spread out with many areas of wilderness full of monsters. Most of the Golden Plains Humans are Goldadams, making this the only region where they outnumber Newmans.
There’s no clear geographical demarcation between the Zoron-speaking Golden Plains society described above and the Valsa-speaking civilization. The northern part of the Golden Plains and southern part of the western steppes sustain interspersed Zoron and Valsa communities. The hilly region between the steppes and the Black Sink, and south of the Trollbogs, is dominated by the Rodite people. Rodite communities take a variety of forms, with freefolk bands at its Black Sink border and in the steppes, and ranchers and farmers occupying most of its central stretch from the mountains eastward. This develop stretch contains several small kingdoms, generally at peace with one another and the Golden Plains people to the south, but in regular conflict with the Boartusk and Horsehead tribes to the northeast and the Army of the Crone to the north. The Spinal Mountains forming the border between Shoulun and Tirfinach is impassible just about everywhere except at Vorota, a city nestled in the middle of the only straight valley across the Spinals. Vorota has taken advantage of this position to make it the largest trading centre north of Salumattu and wealthier than any one city in the Martian Empire. Vorota, formerly known as Georta, was once part of the Martian Empire, forming its eastern gate, but it has been several centuries since the Rodite clans rebelled against the Empire and drove them back into the Martian heartland.
