North/Northeast Region: Vorota and the Western Spinal Kingdoms

Vorota sits in the approximate middle of the Rodite population (not the middle in terms of area, the eastern Rodites being more spread out). On the western side of the Spinal mountains, Rodite lords rule the eastern tip of the Plainchillain and along the mountains to the southern edge of the Kingdom of Cabbage. About a quarter of West Rodite rulers are effectively beholden to the Martian Empire, but this allegiance is kept as secret as possible. The Trade Guild of Vorota won’t let goods pass through that it thinks might be going to the Martians. The Rodite lands include several mid-sized towns but no major cities aside from Vorota.

Structure

All the West Rodite realms, including Vorota, which is simultaneously a city and a kingdom, are feudal and the noble families of most of the kingdoms are related. There have been many attempts to unite the Rodite kingdoms under one crown, and preventing this from happening has long been a priority for the Martians, who have been using bribery, manipulation, and assassination to influence policy and sow discord among the Rodites. While most Rodite monarchs rule their small kingdoms absolutely, some are effectively Martian vassals, some defer to the clergy, and the king of Vorota mostly acts as a figurehead, letting the Trade Guild and public bureaucracy manage the city.
