Character Classes: Physicalists (Family, Divine Order)

Physicalists divide into Ascetics and Fanatics.   The Ascetics group, characterised by its use of physical discipline to achieve enlightenment, contains only the Monk and its subclasses. Monks in Hubworld combine both the PHB and Oriental Adventures descriptions: the combat damage and AC bonuses in PHB describe the monastic order’s own variety of Monkpalm, a martial arts style available only to Monks. The damage and AC bonuses listed in OA pertain to the Monk’s temple style. Each temple teaches a core style in addition to its variety of Monkpalm (and other styles). Monks may learn any number of martial arts and weapons, but their bonuses only pertain to Monkpalm and their temple style. An ability that has been added to the Monk is psionic endeavour: each time a Monk attains a new level, they may roll for psionic powers, with an increasing bonus to the roll each time. High-level Monks who have attained psionic powers may be selected for one of the elite orders of warrior-monks. Serene Knights, the members of these orders, essentially act as unarmored Holy Warriors in service of Lawful Good (Lightsaver), Lawful Neutral (Greykeeper), or Lawful Evil (Darkmaker). Unlike other Monks, Serene Knights learn spells: Shukenja for Lightsavers, Druid for Greykeepers, and Cleric for Darkmakers. Although most concentrated in the northeast, monasteries may be found almost anywhere in the world.   Fanatics are defenders of temples or spreaders of faith and include the Sohei, described in Oriental Adventures, and the Dervish, based on the Monster Manual entry. Dervishes share many of the traits of Sohei but have a berserker attack in place of the Sohei’s ki power and cast Cleric spells rather than Shukenja. Sohei can be found wherever there are monasteries, but most commonly in the northeast. Dervishes are sometimes found protecting monasteries instead of Sohei, but more often are part of nomadic Zoron and Babel -speaking desert tribes.
