Planar Gateways

Scrapped, non-canon
The Planar Gateways are remnants of a precursory civilization of unknown origin. Nowadays, they are remnants of great power, channeling and focusing leylines for mana. While their previous use case was maintaining an expansive portal-network, those days are long gone. Now everything of the ancients is forgotten. Only occasionally surfacing during excavations. Traverse through regular magic has been lost since.
Some magicians have figured out how to activate planar gateways. However, it is only a shadow of their true potential. Most of the time, the planar gateways are refitted for focusing leylines to act as a powerful font of magic and mana. Most organizations built around study and research of magic, have a planar gateway at the heart of their facilities. Their abilities to act as natural source of mana is so extraordinary that many are willing to do whatever to get their hands into one.
Unfortunately these treasured ruins, are not without peril. The planar gateways are naturally gathering mana like condensing water. This mana draws monsters and horrors to nest near it like moths to wildfire. Planar Gateways have also been often involved during Demonic Incursions, channeling their power through chambers grafted from Fleshcharms. This is generally considered as the end-game for demon cults and worshipers as they'll be able to use the powers to help their demon lords to tear a rift through reality and invite a host of infernal invaders.
While the planar gateways are normally virtually indestructible, Demonic Incursion often result in destruction of the used gateway. Some archmages have also figured out ways to break the planar gateways down into their material components. This has allowed the mages to research and cheaply imitate the ancient technology.
