Velani Memorial

"There are no words anyone can say on this day that can make up for all those lost during these past bloody years, but we hope this monument will honor the lives they lived and bring solace to those in mourning."
— Excerpt from Representative Salinar's Consecration Speech
The Drelock Raids left a mark on the galaxy that could never be forgotten, with nearly fifty colonies lost in only a few years. The attacks from the Drelock were brutal to a degree that had never been seen before or since, and left the newly founded Velani Federation in a state of shock. So many souls were lost, and families destroyed, that the entire population was frozen in grief. The freshly formed council of representatives new something had to be done to help everyone move forward and not stay stuck in a perpetual state of mourning. It was decided that a memorial would be made on the capital planet of Velani, with a space cleared of everything but the monument itself. This reminder of the devastation incurred by the Raids has now become the largest physical collection of names in the galaxy, a site of eternal remembrance for all who fell in that terrible time.

Architecture

The memorial is a ten kilometer by ten kilometer oxide proof metal plate engraved with every name of those known to be lost during the Drelock Raids. There is a blatant blank area in the center of the monument that is a stand in for those who's names could not be found.

History

The site was put into place a year after the end of the Drelock Raids when the representative council of the newly formed Velani Federation realized that their citizenry needed some form of closure for all those who died during the war. After it was consecrated in a grand ceremony, free access to all civilians was granted. After some time had passed a small retinue of guards was put into place to protect the monument from potential vandalism and to act as a cleaning crew from time to time.
