Scorn ~ The Kingdom of the Damned.

Demographics

The Kingdom of Scorn is populated by thieves, beggars, witches, thugs, and pirates. They live in 'relative' peace with a strict code enforced by a group called 'The Nightingales', a group of women, magically imbued with supernatural abilities.

Government

The ruling government of Scorn is a Coven of 13 Witches. Each witch is chosen for their power and magical knowledge by the Coven.   The laws of Scorn are received through magical means kept secret by The Coven, and are carved into the flesh of 'Law Walkers'. Law Walkers are men and women who walk the streets wearing tattered robes, repeating all the laws of the land, all day and all night, never seeming to require sleep. No one knows where they come from, as all who see them see a completely different person each time thanks to a spell that hides their true identity. Most assume they were once criminals of the land.

Defences

Protected on all sides by dangerous swamps full of snakes, alligators, insects, and even carnivorous plant life, Scorn is one of the most naturally defended Kingdoms on Edri. It is also home to Pirates, thieves, and Witches making any army question whether it is a good idea to even make the attempt. During the 12th Century A.D.W. the Kingdom of Rivet attempted to invade the Kingdom via Airship. It is written in the Eternal Library that The Coven called a tornado of fire to burn them all from the sky.

Industry & Trade

The main industry of Scorn are It's fishing docks. Dozens upon dozens of fisherman utilize the swamps resources bringing in catches of fish, crabs, crayfish, frogs, and even snake. These are sold to Kingdoms around the world, and some are even considered a delicacy to the Emberians.

Infrastructure

Scorn is a kingdom of shadows and secrets. Information, spells, summoning's, potions, charms, and other less proper things are sold among the bog houses and shops. It's main source of income with outlying Kingdoms is generally not spoken of, but comes at a high price. Whether it be a love potion, a traceless poison, or a spell to make a problem go away, witches, bodyguards, thieves, and pirates can find work here quite easily.

Assets

Situated within the heart of the Bog of Eternal Damnation Scorn is one of the few places in the world where rare, and expensive, aquatic plants can be found. And while their is no fields for cattle or other such animal husbandry, fish are quite abundant and is the largest trading economy outside of information.

Guilds and Factions

Aside from The Coven, there are three main guilds within Scorn. Two competing Fishing Guilds, and a single Information Guild.   The two Fishing Guilds, Sludge (Specializing in bottom feeders and reptiles), and Taint (Specializing in Fish) are constantly competing for business outside of the Kingdom. Salesman are sent to Kingdoms with samples of merchandise, hoping to talk a Princess, Prince, or restaurant owner into purchasing their goods.   The Guild of Whispers is much less competitive, but much more secretive. It is said that to even request a hearing with the guild, one must provide information equally as important as the information you are trying to acquire. Some say the guild secretly control the world, but it's remaining members are unknown after the cataclysm.

History

The founding of Scorn is based in Myth and Legend, with possibly only The Great Librarian knowing the truth. It is said in song and poem that there once was a beautiful queen who ruled over what is now Ember. She was blessed with the power of magic and was beloved by all her people. Before the first Dragon War her husband was killed whilst in attendance of a great ball celebrating his 50th birthday. His body burst into flame while he sat overseeing the party after his wife had retired for the night. Many believed this to be his wifes doing as she was the only magic user in the Kingdom, and she was brought to court and found guilty of murdering the King.   According to legend she escaped and cursed the land to become a dry wasteland, and escaped into the Swamp of Eternal Damnation to form the first Coven, and give refuge to all who had no home. It is said that the people she once ruled became the people of Ember, choosing to adapt to their new home, instead of leaving it.

Architecture

Scorn is a town constantly sinking. It's homes, shops, and other buildings are constantly being built on top of one another as they sink deeper into the swamp.   The foundation of the buildings of Scorn are bogs of waste, building scraps, and fish bones. Upon these are built the ramshackle homes and shops of the people. Nothing is ever seen as permanent, with "Everything sinks" being a popular phrase within the kingdom, so homes are generally small, and cramped together.   Actual physical land is in short supply within Scorn, with the most influential members of the community holding the only solid land in the kingdom.
