The Blind Man's Foresight

The Blind Man's Foresight is the story of Matthew Theves and the explanation of Blind Man's Bluff's name.

Summary

Matthew Theves was a blind human who lived by a lake at the bottom of a cliff.   The inhabitants of Pinefalls, the town atop the cliffside, would often pass by him when they came down the cliff to go fishing in the lake, and they would hear him ramble about how one day there'd by a whole sea at the bottom of the cliff instead of just a lake.   The townsfolk ignored his claims, but one day, Matthew climbed up the mountain, laughing. The townspeople looked down the cliffside in shock to find that the region below was gone and replaced by a sea. Matthew then was then recognized by the town as a fortune teller, and as Pinefalls became a prominent port town, more and more people sought his counsel. The cliff was also renamed to Blind Man's Bluff in his honor.

Historical Basis

Matthew was totally joking when he said the lake would one day be a sea, but after the townsfolk assumed he had foresight abilities, he took advantage of his fame and spent the rest of his life as a fake fortune teller.   The name Blind Man's Bluff was an intentional pun made by his skeptics, especially the leaders of the town.
