Dark Guild

The Dark Guild is a highly secretive group of thieves and assassins, existing as an underworld that is impossible to track down or contact. The only evidence that they exist, is the calling card left at all of their heists and murders. It has been theorized that there truly is no Dark Guild, and it merely is an easy scapegoat for theives and murderers to throw off the trail, but there have been confirmations from enough people that they were contacted by the Dark Guild in their time of need, and hired them for whatever nefarious purposes they required. However once a member is accepted into the guild, they disappear from their old life entirely. The Dark Guild is known to operate in all parts of Veland no matter how remote or difficult to reach.

Founding

It was founded by Jorga Greywing in 12 AH. He founded it after leaving the Martial Guild due to a disagreement with Bil Fyn. He disappeared from his previous life, leaving behind his bonded partner, Ila Irdleliem. The underworld organization began targeting political entities, beginning with tyrannical nobles and rulers.

It quickly became a symbol of the oppressed people of the world, and its foundation and growth possibly contributed to the eventual collapse of the Kingdom of Epixus, although that has never been confirmed. It would seek out missions to assist those in need, but also steal from those who were wealthy or exploited others to continue its funding.

Operations

The operations of the Dark Guild in the 13th century has changed a lot over the centuries. One of the theories is that each new leader of the guild after Jorga has had a different agenda entirely, and that the guild itself is not as unified as it once was in a common goal, and that there are many splinter groups now operating separately from each other, taking on different types of missions as they deem fit their code.

It is still viewed as a shadowy counter to oppression, that has not changed much, but it operates in much greyer territory now, sometimes stealing valuable artifacts from those who weren't necessarily exploitative or wealthy. This shift has led to the Dark Guild to become much more feared throughout the continent, as it's unclear exactly who may be a worthy target by the standards of the guild.

The guild members aren't known, as they never fail to accomplish their mission. Often the only tie to the guild that remains is a calling card left at all scenes of their crimes.

The most well known the guild has ever been occurred in the past century. There was some upheaval in the guild, it's theorized that there some unrest within its ranks with the ascension of a new leader, and there was some kind of underworld war. Gangs fought throughout the continent at seemingly random locations and times, and the unrest was growing so great entire Empires began to take notice and try to stop it. When the underworld war finally ended after years of unrest, a well known drug cartel, at the time known as the Laughing Jesters, seemingly disappeared as quickly as they had appeared. Other drug cartels have appeared since then, but very few last very long in the underworld, leaving many in fear of another underworld war between the Dark Guild and the other underworld gangs.

Structure

The guild structure is unknown beyond that it has a leader. The Guild Leader has been a position selected from within its ranks, and each Leader comes with their own agenda and objectives for the guild. This has led to each "Age" of the guild to be split by the ascension of a new leader. It's assumed there are underlings who oversee operations in certain regions, but that is all just theory based on beaurocratic expansion, but the theory is well founded. Given that it was founded by Jorga, a co-founder of the Martial Guild, it can be assumed it grew with a similar structure to the other guilds in order to maintain its heirarchy.
