Hexplorers was born out of my desire to improve as a Dungeon Master. What better way than to invite old friends, newcomers, and the unitiated to play? I wanted to create something familiar with all the usual fantasy tropes. However, I decided to limit the availability of magic. Magic is present in the world but it is never incidental nor unremarkable.
I also wanted the players to feel as if their characters could really make a difference in the world. I decided to keep the player races limited to the familiar favorites; Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Humans, and Half-Orcs. This would hopefully foster a classic feel to the game. I did not limit classes. The player characters are extraordinary people in a world full of the ordinary. They seek out a ways to improve their world with their developing talents and expertise
Another reason I created Hexplorers was to create a game I could play at the drop of a hat. I made a Discord server to invite friend's to and get a quorum for games. I had hoped to get enough members to play spontaneously However, it was clear, even if I had a few thousand people on the server, games would not be able to happen without pre-planning. So while that aspect was a failure I was able to attract about 10 core players for the Hexplorer's Adventures games.
Initially, I was worried we would not have enough to play each time, but we have the opposite issue. Most games we have seven or more. I need to figure out how to limit it to six. First come first serve seems best, but still not perfect in assembling the party.
