Aftermath

General Summary

Yesterday, news was received that the Army was gathered and that, at dawn, there would be a great battle. Today, news has arrived of a great defeat. The Bridge-Gate was taken, the town burned, the army scattered and whether those from Herrir, those brave souls facing down the invaders would ever return was unknown.
On hearing of the news, the Countess called together her advisors and asked for thoughts on what should heppen next. After all, the county was, potentially, next on the list of invasion. After much discussion, three courses of action were to be pursued in addition to preparing the town and residence for defence...To call upon the clans for support; To request support from the Dwarves from over the mountains; and to seek information about the fates of those that survived the battle. It was the last of these tasks that was passed to her Elven advisor and to her (distant) Cousin - supported by some of the untested field hands that were living and working on the estate.
Initial enquiries with those that had fled the towns immolation gave an unclear version of events - of the gates having been opened from within Lefbridge; Of strange creatures having swum up the river and surprised the army in the rear; and of Dragons and Giant Turtles having paniced the forces of the Army and dispersed them in rout.   Setting off down the road, the adventurers surprised two Lizard scouts who had been tempted from their lookout by a small flock of sheep. Having dispatched the scouts and their viscious mounts, they discovered that the scouts had created a beacon fire on a hill-top and that they could see the next hilltop about 6 miles away.
From the scout's lookout, they observed an approaching caravan which they ambushed. In this latter engagement, they captured the caravan's leader and one of it's animal handlers; freed a captive native to Count's Yardham and plundered the caravan of its beasts of burden revealing that it contained many fine gifts from the Empire to the County.
