Slang
These terms are used by adventurers, traders, and common folk alike, often reflecting the diverse backgrounds and experiences of the Empire's inhabitants.
Dorf: A casual or sometimes teasing term for dwarves, often used in informal settings. While some dwarves may bristle at the term, it has become a common shorthand among adventurers and merchants.
Gobbo: An informal term for goblins, "Gobbo" can be used affectionately or dismissively. Among goblins, it can signify camaraderie, but outsiders should be cautious with its use to avoid offense.
Shinnies: A slang term for treasure, particularly gold coins (kruggers) and other shiny valuables. "Shinnies" is a favorite term among treasure hunters and adventurers who eagerly seek out the next big haul.
Sniffer: A slang term used to describe beastfolk with keen senses, particularly those who rely heavily on their sense of smell, such as hunters or scouts. "Sniffer" can be a compliment, acknowledging their tracking abilities, or a mild tease for someone who’s always sticking their nose into things—literally and figuratively
Mangy: A derogatory term used by those who look down on beastfolk. "Mangy" suggests that the beastfolk is dirty, unkempt, or wild, like a stray animal. It’s often meant as an insult, demeaning both their appearance and status. This term is offensive to beastfolk, as it reduces them to something seen as less than a person.
Clanker: A nickname for heavily armored warriors, especially knights or guardsmen. The term comes from the clanking sound of their armor as they move. It’s often used both as a compliment for their toughness and as a lighthearted jab at their noisiness.
Spellchucker: A slang term for mages, particularly those who specialize in offensive or combat magic. The term "spellchucker" is often used in a somewhat dismissive or teasing manner by those who view magic with a mix of awe and suspicion, such as warriors or rogues who rely on physical skills. It can be used affectionately among comrades, but it also carries a hint of the wild and unpredictable nature of arcane power, implying that mages "chuck" their spells into battle with explosive results. Despite its casual tone, the term acknowledges the formidable presence of mages on the battlefield.
Twiggies: A slang term for elves, especially those from the sylvan or woodland regions. "Twiggies" is often used by humans and dwarves, sometimes affectionately, sometimes with a hint of condescension, referring to their perceived connection to nature.
Choppers: A term for warriors who favor axes or other chopping weapons. It’s often used by and about dwarves, but can apply to anyone who wields an axe with skill and ferocity.
Coiners: A term for merchants or anyone obsessed with making money. It can be used both as a descriptor and as a mild insult for those who prioritize wealth above all else.
Flickers: A nickname for rogues, particularly those who specialize in stealth and quick movements. The term comes from their ability to appear and disappear like a flickering shadow.
Brew-Buds: A friendly term for drinking companions, especially among dwarves and humans. "Brew-Buds" signifies a close bond formed over shared drinks and stories.
Leaf-Lovers: A slang term for druids or anyone with a deep connection to nature. It’s often used by those who are less in tune with the natural world, sometimes with a hint of mockery, but also as a recognition of the druid’s unique bond with the earth.
