Concillar

Kings and Queens have ultimate authority over their holdings and subjects. Many rulers have proven to have a short tempers and make hasty decisions with little regard for the outcomes that may arise. Over time, the position of Concillar was created to avoid such occurences.

Tasked solely with the duty of disagreeing with the ruler, the Concillar is one of the few members of the court who not only has the authority to challenge the decisions of their Lords and Ladies, but are expected to do so. No ruling, law or decision is made in matters of state that don't include some opposition by the Concillar. Pointing out the forgotten details, the minutiae, and costs of each option is their sole responsibility. Even when the Concillar may agree with the decisions they are fighting, they must make sure all options have been explored.

Many rulers find this constant second guessing to be bothersome, but the traditional position gives the Concillar some measure of immunity against punishment; the King can do nothing to the Concillar but retort at their meddling. This doesn't stop some particularly nasty monarchs from finding ways to eliminate the source of their annoyance, but doing so is as tyrannical an act as can be.
