Sheriff
A sheriff is typically an elected (or appointed) political position in the form of civilian law enforcement. Typically, in this world, Sheriff's jurisdiction could be for a town or city, or even a larger area such as a county, depending on the size of the supporting government.
Typically, sheriff's (and any type of formal law enforcement) exist in larger towns that can support having a judicial system, whereas smaller towns only have the ruling executive (Baron, Mayor, Tyrant, etc) performing any type of government-backed law enforcment usually resulting in either execution or locking one in the stockade for a night.
Also in this particular world, the Sheriff runs independent of any type of military or town guard formation, being an entirely civilian position. Should a town guard or military start performing law-enforcement, then martial law is in existence any judicial process is usually dispensed with.
