Metahuman

Also known as a 'meta', a sub-species of humans that is biologically and genetically indistinguishable from other humans until they suddenly develop superpowers at a point between the ages of 16 and 23. This event is called an 'awakening'.
Metas and their powers are kept track of and monitored by the Agency, who make sure powers aren't abused. When a meta acquires their powers, they're legally required to report this to the Agency within 30 days and register for a power control course at their nearest facility.
The first historical record of metas started in 1938 in the USA. At the time, they were instead referred to as 'mutants' or 'freaks'. Their sudden appearance all over the world caused a lot of sociopolitical upheaval, further complicated by the looming Second World War which would start only a year later.
Metahuman superheroes are called 'superheroes'.
